Some dogs are territorial. They are fine in their area but when they get outside that area they become insecure. The only way I know to overcome that is to consistently (daily) expose the dog to the very things that upset them. They are creatures of habit, though I don't know how you make a dog stop barking while driving down the road. Dogs that bite people who come into their area are feeling that they are protecting their area and they do it because they have the idea that they are in charge of that particular area. Some people call it small dog syndrome. Someone else has to take over the lead in the group or the dog will continue to try to dominate every unfamiliar situation. I have heard trainers say this happens because we small dog owners pamper our babies too much but I disagree with that idea. I do think that if we do not teach our dogs basic commands and let them know that we are the ones in charge of the area they will obsess and continue to think they are the protectors which incites barking with the possibility of other bad behaviors like biting. |
I am in the same boat with sonic, when I first got him I did take him to petsmart 2 times, but he was little all he did was sleep in the buggy.. Now omg I'm afraid If i take him he will start a ufc war with other dogs.. there is dogs that come through the yard here alot, neighbors dogs come here he is a shepard dog and sonic started barking and growling trying to get through the fence so the shepard dog did the same back to sonic so I was worried and got sonic and took him in the house. When sonic is in the house he can tell if there is a dog outside he goes CRAZY and starts barking.. so i figured I need to take him to the park walk him get him more socialized, I think he needs to be socialized around male dogs, he is fine with females. |
