Thats good that you care about her that much and I don't mean to sound harsh here, but what about the owners responsiblity? I've read: "we set up a whelping area last night and I should be able to pick up most of the supplies" and "I need to get a thermometer" What are they doing to prepare for this ? They are the ones that are responsible for her not you! I'm sure there are many of us here that if put in the same situation would do the same but come on these are adults here, your just a kid. Something just doesn't seem right about that. She is one lucky little gal to have someone in her life like you who cares so much about her. I only hope that she is as lucky enough to have owners/family who care as much and are doing whatever in necessary to assure a healthy and safe whelp for her and her pups. |
updates so far, she hasnt had any puppipes yet. she gets bigger and bigger every day. so the "due date" was extemely far off. still waiting. keep trying to pressure the owners to take her to the vet but still nothing |
Well I sure hope at some point they realize there could be a problem and get her to the vet. Even if you don't have money I would suggest making sure you know the number and location of the nearest emergency vet in case she starts showing signs of needing medical care. She may not be able to have the pups and need a csection. |
Here is another link to some whelping info. It's pretty basic but easy to read. Maybe you could get them to read it so they will at least be some what aware of signs to look for. This little dog is apparently going to have a large litter and that can be dangerous to a small dog if a person is unaware of what they are dealing with. I know some very expert people have talked to you and I am far from an expert. I hope you can at least get the owner to be a bit more prepared. http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/whelping.htm |
so we have an actual update. good news so far she has had 2 puppies and everything seems to be going well. will continue to monitor her as well as post pictures when i get them loaded up |
So far so good. Is she taking care of them? |
shes acting like a mom which is surprising. |
Wonderful news! Glad all is going well. |
Glad to hear that so far pups are okay, even if momma has taken to them someone will need to keep checking at least every two hours to make sure they are being fed (that includes through the night) and I hope the owners take momma and litter to a vet asap. Good luck and I admire you for trying to help these poor dogs. |

Congrats on a successful 2 pup whelp. Remember she will need a POP shot after birth completion. Also save the placentas, you must know and have equal number of placentas to puppies birthed. If not, immediate trip to vet. |

Is her labor over? Is she acting normal? Are you sure all the puppies are out? Have you felt her belly? |
we felt her belly earlier and it feels like it did pre-pregnancy. she is acting normal and we've been hand feeding her because she doesnt want to move at all. we have been checking on them every 45 minutes to an hour. |
What do you mean when you say she doesn't move at all ? is she feeding pups ? can you take the pups away & when you do does she try to follow or is she really not wanting to move at all ? if she's refusing to move there may be another pup in her & if there is after this long she could be in serious trouble by morning , not to mention the pup . |
i meant more along the lines she didnt want to get up to go to the bathroom or anything. but as soon as i posted it she got up and went to the bathroom haha. shes eating, feeding the pups, cleaning them, and now going to the bathroom. |
Glad everything seems to have gone ok. Hope the owners will be taking her in to the vet Monday! |

OMGOSH, those puppies are SO TINY! I hope mama is ok..and puppies. Congratulations everything seemed to go well. |
the problem were having with her now is that shes used to sleeping with her parents on the bed. now shes getting up and walking around the house and trying to sleep on beds, and leaving her puppies |
You might want to move the pups to the bedroom she is used to sleeping in. Those puppies need her body heat. New moms don't always understand how to take care of puppies right away. She has never done this before. I'm so glad she only had two. Hope things continue to go well. |
its not the bedroom thats messing her up because she doesnt sleep in my girlfriends room, yet shes trying to come and get in bed with her and sleep. she just has sleep in a bed since they first got her and isnt used to sleep in her whelping area we made for her, which isnt a bed, but its pretty comfy. |
Congrats. I would move the whelping box to whatever room she wants to be in. She wants to be close to you. She will relax then. |

Congrats on a successful whelp, thankful that all went well!! Plus they were born on my daughters birthday !! It is very unusual that a mamma will leave her pups so soon other than to potty or eat. If you dont confine her or move the box she will try to take the pups to the other room and may harm them during the process. She could drop them or bury them in a pile of clothes on the floor. You might want to find a way to confine her to the room with the whelping box in it or move them to the other room where she is wanting to sleep. These pups are so very tiny and fragile, I would hate to see anything happen to them. My Miah was use to sleeping in our room and after she had a litter, one night we caught her moving the pups up to our room. We had to put the gate up so she would stay with her pups. Docking needs to be done within 3-5 days depending on the vet. |
i don't want to overload you with info. But have you got the calcium supplement for MOM? If not one whole scrambled egg a day should help out. She does need more calcium when she is nursing. Can you not bring her bed into the whelping area; and then close off the whelping area so that she can be confined to this spot? If not move the whelping area into the bedroom she most wants to be in; but someone is going to need to insure she stays with the pups enough. |
Does someone you know have a baby gate? They are going to need one anyway once those puppies start to move around. She needs to stay near those puppies. If their body temperature drops they could die. |
im going to talk to her parents and see if we can move the box into their room for the night and move it back where its been during the day. also i cant move the bed because its a human bed she sleeps on lol. she sleeps on her parents bed with them. |
