HELP with ears please!!!! I have a 9 month old female yorkie who had beautiful erect ears!! Then all of a sudden one of her ears flopped over and caved in. It is shaved, and I tried taping it for a while, gave her calcium, but nothing works. I don't understand this, because I thought the ear cartlidge was set at 6 months, so why would it do this now. Her sister's ears never stood, and her Mom's ears don't stand. Any help out there??? |
Oh wow I have never heard of that before, so i cant be of any help, but I am going to watch this to see what it could be, because I have never heard of that before! Sorry it happened to your fur-baby |
If her moms and sisters ears don't stand it maybe in her genetics to have floppy ears it may be something about how the ears are. |
It is not uncommon for erect ears to flop over when these babies teethe....are her ears good and clean, no infection....are they clipped (top 1/3rd)....it could be genetic...."thick" ear leather....but if they were already up and now they are down, I dont honestly know....I think I would rule out the other issues I mentioned, and then I would tape them to see if you can get them back up. |

A vet told a friend of mine that you can add a little Knox unflavored gelatin to a puppy's diet and that will help bring the ears up. I've not tried it but my friend said it helped her puppy. |
Thanks everyone No, her ears are clean, no infection, no scratching etc. I have them taped again, but doubt it will due any good. I was reading online where it says some dogs have a crease in their ear that will cause it to droop. She does have a crease now, I just don't understand why it happened all of a sudden. I am giving her 1/4 of a CA pill everyday now too.:animal36 |
Gosh.....maybe it is just me, but I am a little worried about the calcium pill for this....there are many metabolic things regulated by calcium/potassium balance...like heart beat, for example.....did your vet recommend calcium for floppy ears? I would run that past the doc..... |
When Jasper was teething his ears would flop over. They came back up after that and at around 8 months of age he went through a second round of teething and they flopped over again. They came back up and haven't flopped over since. I was kinda hoping he would have the floppy ears because I think they're so cute!:) |
