I Can't Believe They Said No :( We took our babies to Lowe's which we have done forever. Well today a manager came up to us and said we can no longer bring them inside.:( He said they had an incident with a dog biting someone so they no longer allow dogs. We don't even put ours on the floor when we are there. I politely told them I would be doing my shopping at Home Depot from now on but I really was upset as we have to drive 20 miles further to do this. |
But that manager has to treat everyone the same and protect the public at the same time. Even small dogs can reach out and nip or growl with teeth and scare kids or old people or people who fear dogs. I love dogs and have had them all through my life but when I am shopping, I like to be free from dogs sniffing my nether parts or eyeing me suspiciously as I try to move down the aisle they are in as the owners totally ignore their behavior. Then there is the "accident" you walk upon. I've walked out of a store where a dog was allowed to repetitively harass me as the owners just laughed and "tried" to pull it off. And had it bitten me I nor anyone who witnessed the bite would likely shop there ever again, not to mention the likely lawsuit for failure to provide a safe shopping environment and putting my health at risk. People who won't control their dogs have ruined it in many stores for those who do. The hapless manager is put in the difficult position of having to allow them to continue as he tries to ride herd on them to avoid mishaps and worse while trying to also do his job or just keep all dogs out. I can understand his viewpoint. And as a doglover, I can understand your disappointment. But so many dog owners can't/won't control their dogs, they can make shopping around them a nuisance or a danger. |
Is this a local rule or company wide? I love going to lowes with KS! I would be sad if we couldn't take her there anymore. |
I was in the garden section one time with carrying Hot Rod and the clerk told me that I shouldn't go inside with him because I would be asked to leave. I really do not have a problem with this as I started to think about this--what if all the construction guys, who probably would have larger dogs, were able to bring all of their pets in with them. How many of them would be so well behaved and also, how many might have "leave little packages" in the aisles that didn't get cleaned up. I guess it really depends on how you are asked. I never knew of any rule at Lowe's and I thought the clerk was very nice and polite when she told me. I was yelled at one time at Target by the security guard from across the aisle. That, I felt, was totally unecessary. I was just inside the store at the $1.00 bins. I thought that could have been handled much better. |

I didn't even realize some retail stores other than pet stores were pet friendly. How do you know - is there a list? Do you call ahead? Just try it and see what happens? I guess I figured if I could take my 7lb dog inside, they would have to let someone take a 90lb dog inside as well to be fair. |
Most of the malls and stores in my general area will post signs if pets are not allowed. I resort to shopping instead at upscale stores that DO allow pets and I always carry Romeo in my arms. If I must shop where pets are not allowed then Romeo will stay home (with someone) or my daughters will stay in the car with him. I did have one instance where a lady reached out and touched Romeo (my head was turned for less than 30 seconds) and I was so furious. He let out the meanest growl and I am surprised he did not bite. I was asked to leave Ulta, but she said if i had a bag Ralph could go in and leave his head out. But everywhere else I go i have never had a problem! (: |
My niece used to take her Yorkie everywhere! One time she was asked to leave Target and she got offended. While I absolutely love Georgie and Coco they are my children I understand everyone doesn't feel that way. I usually take them for trips to the Dog Bakery and Sbux drive thru's that way there isn't any issues. The other reason I never take Georgie to stores is because he is a booger and doesn't like getting in his dog carrier:rolleyes: |
I have found if they sell food of any kind, they by law can not lets dogs in...used to be able to run into Walgreens, then they started selling milk and ice cream and bread and stuff and the manager told me because of the food items, cant have animals in....but I have not had any problem going any place else....my babies like to hide quietly in the bottom of the "purse" and just look out thru the mesh....Hailee did start barking one time at a man in a chicken costume and I had to pretend I was choking to death on something until I could get to the bathroom and shut her up! |

I will say this.. They have to think of all of their customers. You deal with people who do not have boundaries, (or their children) will touch the dog. Since the laws are in place where owners should have control of their dogs, the liability with fall on the owner IF something will happen. The stores will have some liability also and they have to protect themselves. I do not take offense if I am asked not to bring Corky in stores. Most of the places here only allow dogs if are only allowed outside; So he stays home. |
If I had a store I wouldnt allow dogs either. That wouldnt keep me from shopping at a store that i liked to shop at. What if there is a customer in there that has allergies to dogs. Why should they e forced around a dog when they are a paying customer same as the customer with the dog. |
I just wish people would keep their hands to themselves. I can't believe how many people try to pat Joey on the head, he hates that. My foster seems friendly, but scares easily and people just want to touch them. Sorry to hear about Lowes, I've heard that some Home Depots are doing it too. I often stop by there on the way home from Petsmart, and won't leave the dogs in the car. |
