Car sick Hello all, when I picked up my puppy yesterday and he was fine until we got in the car. He started vommiting and shaking, is this normal? I read that yorkies get easily car sick, and if so what can I do to prevent/help this situation? I also read that I have to get him used to daily life things. What should I do? |
Do you have a puppy seat for him? It was probably only the first or second time he was in a car, so all is not lost. He may have eaten shortly before you picked him up and I'm sure he was nervous. My lil Muffin used to get car sick as a puppy, but frequent short trips to get her used to traveling helped her get over it. You'll not want to feed him within two hours of going for a car ride until he is used to traveling. Some just get motion sick, I suppose. My Kacee was never car sick, but I still took her for frequent and short trips to get her used to being in a car. I would take her to quieter areas like parks, so there wouldn't be things around that would scare her. She loves to go for rides in the car. You may want to even just take your puppy out to the car and sit for awhile to get him used to being in the car, before you take him for rides. Good luck to you! |
How old is your puppy and when was the last time he ate? When I picked up ZoE the breeder told me (and then repeated it :D) that she had not fed her the meal prior to us picking her up, as she didn't want her pottying in the crate on the ride home. That meant, a ride straight home and immediately feeding her upon arrival. Maybe the shakes were from hypoglycemia? |
Hi Yorkieusa, I don't have a puppy seat, I have a pet taxi for him. Is that ok? Should I get a puppy seat? Or if I take the top off, will it be better? |
When I got Bella she was 16 months old. She pooped and puked in the crate. I have learned since, that if I feed her about and hour or two before travel she does ok. She was also shakey when traveling. Which I believe she was scared of it. If you can try feeding him about one, two, or three hours you travel with him. Good luck. |
A carrier like yours is a very safe way for your puppy to travel. I'm sure the move away from home must have been upsetting. Is he doing alright now? How old is he? You don't want to take a young puppy out very much especially before he has had all his shots. Take him out for trips in the yard but try to stay away from places where other dogs have been until he is older. Hope he is doing better. Just try not to get him too overwhelmed at first. |

I don't have much experience with this yet, but Yumi gets car sick too. From what I've read so far it sounds like it can get better as they get older, but some dogs never get over it. I think you can use motion sickness medications on them, but I don't know anything about the dosage, or what age they're safe for. I also read cracking the car window can help. I know from experience that looking out the side windows can actually make motion sickness in humans worse, as can closing your eyes. I would think it would be the same for dogs. That said I'm not sure if it would be better in the taxi or out, guess it'll depend where they look. |
Thank u all for ur responses...my puppy is 10 wks old and he does tremble a lot...is it safe to drive with the top of the pet taxi off? Do think that would make him more comfterble? |

Car seats are used with a harness and a tether that hooks to the harness to keep the dog in the seat fully restrained. Your pet is safer closed in the pet taxi. He may actually feel safer in there as he won't get as scared. Does he have to travel a lot? It sounds like he is either very fearful or maybe has some physical issue? Has he been to the vet? Have you discussed the trembling with the breeder? I would be concerned if he is trembling a lot. |
I feel for you. My Ginny Joy vomits every time she goes for a car ride. I travel and take my Yorkies almost every where. For longer trips, we have to medicate her. But short trips to the doggy park, vet etc. I avoid feeding her for 3 hours before leaving if poss. Ginny weighs almost 7 pounds so she is ok to go a few hours with out food. I also give her dry crackers ( salt free) which seems to help. |

Some puppies grow out of getting car sick. He should still be with his mommy and is going through a big change and he could have just been very scared. Remember he should not really go places until he has had all of his shots. |
My "biggin" Marley is a great traveler... Three weeks after I adopted him I took him on a 1500 mile round trip to Illinois so I could walk in my baby sister's cancer survivor event. He ate, potty'd, and slept on que. My new guy Maxie is a different story. He 'pits up' if the car weaves; is in stop and go traffic; or he gets too close to a wndow. He does like to stay at Crowne Plaza hotels (most welcome small pets with a hefty fee); and likes to visit new dog parks. My life is richer (albeit more constrained) since my Yorkie fur-kids came into my life. |
Congrats on you new addition. As for being carsick, my poor Maggie May was throwing up as the breeder drove to meet me and then from picking her up to home--45 minute long drive. She threw up the entire ride. She was pretty much carsick for her whole first year with us. I had and have the Snoozer car seat(s) and I could see that once Maggie discovered if she looked out the window, she was fine. She's a maniac now and loves to go for rides. Everytime I take her out thru the garage, she runs towards the car and wants to jump in. lol Whenever hubby gets home she tries to climb into his car. We love the snoozer. Hot Rod never really got carsick except the time I drove to my sisters which was an hour long trip--he was about 5 mos old. I didn't have the carseat yet so I had him in his crate. He threw up a little but his little tummy was so upset from the ride that he didn't eat for a whole day. Once he got into the snoozer he was fine with riding in the car. good luck. |

I'm sure it was just a case of nerves. My little guy gets skittish and sick in the car too. Now that's he's a little older (4 months) we're going to start bringing him on quick trips so that he can get used to the car more. Today we went to the vet and he made it about 10 minutes before getting sick. Good luck! |
