Trifexis anyone tried Trifexis for fleas/heartworms? I've heard some good stuff, but I've heard horror stories about dogs with severe vomiting and seizures... I know you can have a reaction to almost anything...food, meds, etc. just curious about reactions in yorkies been using Heartgard.... |
I think a lot of people have the same question you do, especially now that a lot of people may be forced to look for a new heartworm tab after production halted on a couple of top brands. |
We use Heartguard too. I'd like to learn about Trifexis too. |
I give Chase and Calvin Trifexis. Chase has been getting it since last year, and Calvin just started it on Sunday. So far there have been no problems. Before the Trifexis they were on Sentinel. I noticed that Chase would have soft/runny poo for a day or two after the Sentinel, but not after the Trifexis. Hope this helps :) |
I only know what I've found online (still on interceptor for heartworm) while researching flea/tick meds... TRIFEXIS (beef-falvored tablet every 30days) Elanco Spinosad (belongs to new class of antiparasitics derived from naturally occurring soil microbe) 140mg Milbemycin oxime (broad spectrum antiparasitic) 2.3mg (same as Sentinal) 5-10lbs Kills fleas (adult) Prevents heartworm disease Treats and controls adult hookworm, roundworm, and whipworm infestations Country of origin/mfg ??? |
Ralph had trifexus before, it was a pain giving it to him, but it made him very scratchy and like gittery in away.So he is on heartguard now. |
Because my vet was out of Sentinel, I am now using Trifexis. You need to give it after a meal to avoid nausea, but that was also the case with Sentinel. My pups got their second dose three days ago, and I made sure that I would be home all day to observe them and know if anything was amiss. So far, so good, no problems. |
I just made an appointment with a new vet for next week. Cooper is on Sentinel and they said they have a limited supply, but have been starting their patients on Trifexis. I still have 3 months of Sentinel left. They front desk said they weren't sure if Sentinel would be coming back at all. I suppose I'll start my research in preparation for the exam. Max is on Revolution. |
I haven't tried it. My vet is recommending advantage multi |
I use Trifexis for my adult Yorkie and Toy Fox terrier. It has never caused any problems in my dogs. Make sure you give it with a meal! Some dogs vomit from it but giving it with a meal usually prevents that. I have to use Advantage Multi with my Biewer puppy because they have to be at least 5 lbs for Trifexis. |
I have always used advantage for fleas and heartguard for the heart worm. Never had any problems, If it aint broke, Dont fix it |
Last month was the first I time I used the Trifexis. Everything has went well. But Bella is getting to smart with this pill thing. Peanut butter didn't work. Bread squished around it didn't work. I tried lunch meat. Crazy. I just kept trying. I guess this month it'll be a comgo of peanut butter, pill on whole wheat. In her pen. LOL It's bad when they look at you and spit out at the same time. |

Trifexus ? We have excellent flea control with it. We live in Fl so have year round risk of heart worms too. The first few months some of the dogs vomited after getting the med. Now we make sure they have a full tummy before giving the pill. All are on Trifexus, except Abba he is under 5 pounds. |

Trifexus I have been using this for about 6 months on my two. They have had no problems. My vet said to cut them in half and give half one day and the other half the next day. I always give them with a couple of their favorite treats. |
We stocked up on Interceptor before our vet ran out. My other dog takes Heartgard. Not an option for Ellie. If they never start production again, we will probably go to Advantage Multi for her. I don't like spinosad, so I wouldn't consider Trifexis for my pups. Interceptor plus Program would be the same as Sentinel. |
I will not use Comfortis which in in Trifexis. I don't like the fact that there are so many issues with vomiting. Having to give it with a meal is just not the right answer for me. I use Heargard .. Sentinel for a couple....just praying I have enough until they start manufacturing it again. |

Strudel is on Revolution how does that compare? |
Jack was on Interceptor and Frontline Plus before. Since my vet was out of the Interceptor for his size, I inquired about the Trifexis. I started him on it last month and he had had no problems with it. I gave it to him in a bit of cheese and then gave him a "cookie" so he had something on his stomach as is recommended. I like the fact of giving him one pill as opposed to two different medications for heartworm and fleas. |
To answer the question, how long have your dogs been on trifexus? Lily (a lab), Rubin, and Gracie ( both Yorkies) have been on trifexus for over a year. Ginny Joy ( She just turned a year old) has been on it about 6 months. My vet will not give it to dogs under 5 pounds. We have had no problems, other than the vomiting the first few times we gave it to Lily and Rubin vomited once. |
