can you use human shampoo on a dog. A friend of my aunt she has a yorkie terrier a minne one and she use a human shampoo sice she don't like the smell of the dog shampoo. And she did say she does smell a lot better and it don't bother the dog either. she just does it onces a month. I we did get the kind type of shampoo she does use. but there are some places say no and other said yes it would work. I just don't know what to go by. I haven't called the vet yet or send them a msg to see what they say. I just thought that I would check on here first. |
Human shampoo has a different ph level so it's not recommended for dogs. Conditioner is ok. |

Human shampoo is a bit more acidic than dog shampoo, which can cause drying of the skin. I use it but then I use a lot of conditioner which I massage in and leave on for a few minutes, then rinse off. This prevents drying overdrying the skin. |
Human shampoo is too harsh for our pups, baby shampoo included. Miss Mini who albeit has many allergies, had a severe one from baby shampoo. There are enough products for our pups out there that human shampoo does not need to be used, including hypoallergenic tearless shampoos. Baby shampoos have their own issues... The PH level is different and its not a good for them. They have many many dog shampoos now and a lot of them even smell better then my shampoo. I have used and like pet head and nootie and I also use a different face wash from furfection and I love love love it. Callie gets a bath every week and never has dry skin. Her vet even suggested if her allergy's where getting bad again or she spent a very very long time outside I may need to give her two baths in a week. |
I love my Puppy shampoo, i also send a bottle with each puppy home, that way the new parents don't have to worry, and for my Pack I buy shampoo by the gallons.. I love Top Performance Pet shampoo and conditioner, it smells yummy and is affordable..specially when I have to bathe 5 dogs twice a month.. hugs, |
My understanding is since human shampoo has a lot of soap, and the Ph levels. it is not good for dogs. |

I've often used people shampoo & conditioner on my yorkie and had great results. With my last yorkie I used Nexxus Humectress alot, but I think they've since changed the formula cos it isn't what it used to be. Pantene is a good go too in a pinch. There's been times when I was visiting friends or my kids at college, and ZoE got muddy & needed a quick bath. The key to using people products if you need to in a pinch, is to make sure you only rub the product into the hair and not the skin and rinse, rinse, rinse thoroughly. |
Most shampoos both dog and human, have detergents in them that help strip the skin of it's natural oils. Since the Ph of a human shampoo is not the same as that of a dog's they are doing even more harm to the skin with the human products. The skin feels it needs to produce more oil as the skin is stripped during the bath so you have the oil glands trying to hyper produce in order to replace what was taken away. Conditioners will help the fur feel softer but will not replace the natural ph of the skin. That is why the fur appears oily in just a few days after a bath. |
I never thought about useing conditioner with the shampoo on her we just might do that if the vet said it's alright we just might see the vet on monday to get her toe naile cut again. thanks all for the help. |
