yorkie incontinence Has anyone ever had a problem with yorkie incontinence? My little girl is almost 10 yrs old. She has had this problem off and on for about 5 yrs. It was just occasionally, but now it's all the time, mainly when she is sleeping. She has always slept in the bed with me, so you know what that means. I have waterproof pads on the sheets and the bedspread, plastic covers on the pillows. But she likes to get right up next to me, she puts her little butt in the curve of my neck and lays on the pillow. Of course I get peed on at least once every night, but I would never take her out of my bed. I have to bathe her every morning because she has pee from the waist down. Does anyone know what causes this or do you know of a treatment? The vet has tried her on a couple of meds but they didn't work. I sure could use your help. Thanks |
aaw poor baby, have you thought about diapers for her? |
Miss Priss has a coppery color... 1 Attachment(s) You can see in this pic that she has an orange look on her face, is this normal? She is silvery gray on top now. Oh and she has calmed down now, well on most days, ;) she is a doll baby and we love her so much.:) Attachment 366015 Sorry this was supposed to be a separate thread...... |
Sorry I thought I was posting a separate thread... |
My Lucy is 10+ and has the same problem, caused by kidney disease. It's frustrating, isn't it? We recently started using baby diapers at night, with a hole cut out where her tail goes. She doesn't like it, but I couldn't have her pee pee in the bed. This has made life so much easier, and nights are more restful now. I wish I could be more help to you. Seniors are extra work, but I wouldn't trade my girl for all the world. It may be time for a check up visit to your vet. Best wishes. |

There are disposable little doggie diapers that you can buy. Have you considered using them? |
Hasn't you vet suggested medication to help with the incontinence? I think a visit is in order. :) |

I hope you can find something that will work for your girl. |
Thank all of you for your replies. I have tried the diapers and they won't stay on her. She has been put on Proin 25 for a long time. It doesn't help. She has had her bladder checked but not the kidneys. I will suggest that to her vet. Thanks again. |
I see your vet has tried some different medications. Did he do a urinalysis on her? If yes and it was negative for UTI, sometimes a vet that practices VOM or a chiropractor may be of help to her. |
I have used human diapers on and off with my yorkies mostly when they were in heat. Ufortunately due to kidney disease Zoey is in them most of the day unless in her playpen (1/2 bed and 1/2 incontinence pads) or outside. The diapers stay on fine for me. I buy the premie baby diapers and cut a hole. She does wear a baby 0-3 month old onsie on top overnight. I buy the cheap Walmart brand diapers and the $.25- $1.25 onsies for her. If the onsie are too wide in the shoulder use can use safety pins to make them smaller. She is used to wearing clothes anyway so she doesn't care. Actual dog diapers are too expensive for my liking and they never stay on my petite yorkie's butts. |
My husband just mentioned some problems his brother is having with his older (not super old) large dog. I think it is hip problems but he had also started having trouble with urinating in the house. I think of the incontinence variety. They apparently fed him too much people food which has a higher sodium content than dogs should have. The sodium of course caused fluid retention. They changed his diet and the peeing got much better. I don't know if this applies to the OP, but it might help somebody out there. Just another reason to watch what we feed them. |
I dealt with that for a couple of years with my senior mid-size dog. She had thyroid problems and that caused her to leak, day or night. |
Help with my Yorkie Lulu is almost 6 yrs old and will pee in the house after oeing outside! Ughh. This has been a habit for abut 2 months. No changes in her food, exercise, health or living situation. Please help. |
Maybe she has a UTI. I would get her into the vet to get her checked out since this is new. |
