potty training options..please help! Hi Guys, I am new here and we just got a teacup yorkie. He will be 12 weeks on tuesday. We live in montreal and its -5 outside now and will only get colder. I have been trying to potty train him on a pee pee pad, and he used it once or twice to pee, but since then will only pee or pooh outside. MOst of the times, he will pee outside and pooh inside the house somewhere. There was a time today where his wee-wee was wet and I could not find where he did it in the house. I was wondering if I should teach him to go outside using "Business" or inside on pee pee pads. I was also considering the bells technique. I just do not want to integrate more than one together and confuse him. My only concern about outside is the cold, since he is so small and would like to teach him to do it in one place of my balcony instead of just anywhere. Which techniques have you guys had the best luck with? Any urls with good lessons on training? For example today, he pooh'ed in the house and I did not see it until some time after when he was in his crate sleeping. I took him out of his crate, brought him to the spot and had him smell it, then picked him up from his neck and said NO, then said BUSINESS a few times and put him outside. Was this wrong? Should i of just ignored the issue since I saw it after it was done? Once I bring him back in, do I just forget about it or do I put him in his crate for a few mins? Thanks |

You will have to make a decision if you want your puppy to go outside or inside. I don't really know enough about your climate, but I've never taken mine out at the temperature you mentioned. I trained mine to ring bells to go out. It worked great, however, they will also ring them to just go out and play, but that is part of it. I don't take mine outside in bad weather (or extreme cold) or at night. I take her out into the garage to use pads at those times. She understands whenever she rings the bell if I ask her if she wants to go out in the garage. I keep a couple of pads in the house close to the door in case no one can let her out at the time she needs to go or we are gone. Have you limited your yorkie's space or have you allowed full access to your home? In order to succeed, you will need to limit her area. |
Good luck in whatever you manage to do. I take mac and mellie outisde but also you pee pads. when it is really cold outside (anything under 50 ) they look at me like I'm nuts if I want them to go outside. Just be patient in whatever you decide to do, reinforce with treats. And good luck! They can be rather stubborn. |
I have a multi-level house, so I limit him to one floor only, but limiting him to only part of it on that floor is hard due to layout...any suggestions? Also, should I let him bark when we play and should i be picking him up to sit with me on the couch or just pet him, or will that just spoil him? |
