Pancreatitis and dog food? So Gizmo has one episodie of pancreatitis ( i think it was due to giving him a big ear and he was eating the stella and chewys dried patties that have a lot of fat) anyways has anyone had a dog that had pancreatitis and now they are back on their normal food? Hes eating Royal Canine Low Fat but it doesnt seem to be satisfying him since it has mostly carbs and low protein. Gizmo's old food only had 15% fat wondering if i could put him back on Fromm..... |
My late Molly had Chronic Pancreatitis and the only food I found that she would eat was Hill's I/D and she would also have some of the Natural Balance Reduced Calorie Dry Food. She at first was eating Royal Canine Low fat (RX) and she tired of it quickly. I know everyone has different experiences, but this is what worked for me. And the only treats she had were Cherrios. |
If he wasn't hospitalized with a bad case of it, then I would think you could return to a normal food. Just not what you were feeding him. |
nope he wasnt hospitalized. My sisters big dog was visiting and she chews on a lot of bones so Gizmo wanted one so i gave him a pig ear and she liked the stella so he ate that too.... so thats not normal for him... i am going to check with vet but i already know what she is going to say.... |
After one bout with Princess my vet wants her to stay on i/d. It's been about 9-10 months & she's still on it. Personally, I have no intention of leaving it as long as she continues to do well. Have you tried 'bulking' it up by mixing the canned with dry to see if that's more fulfilling? |
Gizmo does eat the I/D canned food with the Royal Canine dry food but he is constantly eating like every 1-2 hours and pooping more. Which tells me the food just has a bunch of fillers. He used to be on Fromm grain free and i think he needs to be on that since hes getting itchy again with the royal canine. ( which is why i switched him to grain free) |
My parents had a Sheltie that ate some chicken skins and came down with a bad case of pancreatitis. When he got better he was on a low fat diet for two weeks and then went back to eating regular dog food. He never had another bout but they never let him eat anymore chicken skin or pork. |
Jackson may or may not have had pancreatitis. Took him to an ER-type vet who treated him as such, spent a ton of money, and now I don't even think that's what it was nor does our regular vet who I trust and like very much. She thinks it was just a really bad GI upset from too much people food. He was hospitalized overnight. With that said, I played it safe and was feeding low fat grain inclusive for a bit. He was on the Purina EN from the vet for about 3 weeks, then we did Natural Balance, and a few others. Never liked the results from those foods... he began almost 'shedding' when bathed/brushed, eye goop was starting, he was always hungry, energy began decreasing on certain foods, coat seemed to lose shine, so after I'd say 4 months, or so, we went back to the regular food in which he did best on, which was Acana grain-free. Now he's on Acana Singles line (25% protein, 15% fat) and doing fantastic. |
One of my dogs had pancreatitis at age 5 and went back on regular food after he recovered. He was fine for 5 more years, then got pancreatitis again. He is now on a lower fat diet for life. |

I have read that pork products aren't necessarily a good thing for dogs as they can, not always, lead to pancreatitis. I am a new convert to a holitstic vet and am extremely pleased with them to date and their treatment methods, so I'm gonna put my two cents in and suggest maybe a wee visit to a holistic vet for their opinion. They tend not to over medicate and use more natural remedies which puts less strain on a not properly functioning or failing organ. And so weird all these processed kibbles and vets saying protein bad corn meal good, a more natural diet allows the dogs body to take what it needs without fillers. |

Stella & Chewy's freeze dried food is higher in fat and protein than most foods. It should not be fed as the main ingredient of the diet of a small dog especially where there is concern about the pancreas or kidneys. The frozen form of S&C is much lower in fat and protein. I feed the freeze dried only when it has been re-hydrated and only occasionally. S&C's is a high grade food but the freeze dried is a concentrated form. Your dog was probably able to live with the ingredients of the dog food but the addition of the pig ear pushed him over the edge. Hopefully he is doing much better by now. |

My little girl is only 1 1/2yr old and just had her first bout of pancreatitis and it was very mild. But the vet did put here on wet I/D for two weeks and then we put her back on dry food but I switched from Frrom Whitefish and potato to Solid Gold in the green bag...sorry I forgot what it's called...anyway it's one of the lowest fat food I could find. She's been fine ever since, but she hasn't gotten her appetite back per say so just in case I took her back for blood work. The vet said everything was looking good. But I got some dry I/D and have mixed the two foods together. She really seems to like that. Our 7yr old male Snickers has been eat the same food the Frrom for years and has never had pancreatitis even when he got a little heavy a couple of years ago. Sophie Kate has Pancreatitis and only eats either Hills ID or RC Low Fat. For a treat she can have Charlee Bear treats (low fat). As far as the pooping issue, I can tell you that Hills ID has a lot of fiber and that may be what is causing the issue. Sophie Kate has been on it for 3 years after a couple of episodes of Pancreatitis, she will still eat it but sometimes sticks up her nose. That is when she gets the RC Low Fat (for a change in diet) or honestly I hand feed her. |
Zoey had her first attack of P after eating Stella & Chewy's. Then two years later she had a second attack after giving her treats that were 24% fat (I never checked the fat content because they were treats). She is on RC low fat for life. My vet said she can not have anything with more than 5% fat. She is hungry every few hours on RC and I have to feed her three times per day. We saw the vet this last week and I told him how hungry she was and he said to give her some rice and chicken at night to fill her tummy till morning. Even feeding her more she has not gained weight. We need to keep her at 6lbs as she had femeral head surgery and should not get heavy. I told the vet I was really sad that I couldn't feed her raw and he understood that and was very nice about it even though he does not agree with raw. My Jackson eats raw but he has a rock gut. Jackson is a good sized Maltese. |
