I've been feeding Prey Model Raw for about 8 months now and researching it for much longer than that. I feed chicken necks and wings all the time. In fact they're the perfect size for Yorkies and the bones in the wings and necks are the softest and easiest for them to handle. Nancy i would assume Joey is a gulper, when first introducing meaty bone meals to dogs they tend to get so excited they forego the chewing and skip straight to the swallowing:p. A trick to get them to chew is to hold one end of it while they chew on the other, eventually it will click that they have to chew up the bones well before swallowing. |

What are the bison backs? are they raw?. I'm picturing a huge back and a tiny yorkie gnawing away lol |

I break the wing down into 2 parts usually the drumette and the wing itself with the little leg. |

Lol, Joey would just love that! Yes, the bison back rib is raw, it's the rib from the back of a bison, they have them for humans with lots of meat on them, but they also sell them for dogs where most of the meat is gone. Ann (Wylie's Mom) told me about them, they sell them at Whole Foods and she has the butcher cut in three inch sections. As I said before they haven't eaten any of the bone, they do gnaw on it, and I believe that's good for their teeth. They really love them, and it's fun to give them a treat. |
I'm glad I read your posts Abbie's mom. I was giving Minnie beef bones only because I had heard they will not splinter like chicken bones. I may be wrong, but I think if a dog is going to have teeth problems, they will have them no matter what and a once a year cleaning by the vet is in order. |

Wow, thanks Nancy and Lovetodream. Five year old dogs that don't need teeth cleaned by a vet is great. I'll try what you both listed. It would be great not to worry about Minnie having general anesthesia once a year. |

I had a mix that I switched to PMR in his 8th year, because everything else made him ill. When we had to help him across the Rainbow Bridge at 17, his teeth were pearly white, and NO bad breathe at all. I marvelled, as did the vet. He'd never had a teeth cleaning. Abigail, however, at 6, has had one cleaning, but her vet comments: "Teeth look very good - for a yorkie" :). I will conclude by saying I no longer feed PMR, though it is my belief that if it works for your dog, it is the best natural diet for a canine. I have both my yorkies on Primal Raw, and they are doing very well. |
I haven't fed raw as long as abbie's mom but my little girl will be 2 in May and she has lovely clean teeth. There is nothing in kibble that cleans teeth. It's the enzymes that are in raw food that helps keep the mouth clean. Apparently someone is starting to realize this because they are making gels and sprays and other products that contain enzymes that clean the tarter off the pet's teeth. I think it is better to just never get the tarter but I guess just the fact that people are starting to realize the connection is a step in the right connection. I also give Gracie regular size 12" bully sticks to chew on. I don't really know how much they clean teeth but it helps her with her desire to chew and they are the safest of the chew products out there. |
