is it safe to go outside yet!! i hv 2 newbies who hasent had their last set of shots yet so im pad and crate training right now.. today i was invited to a friends b-day party for her poodle next weekend, and would like to attend with all my babies..i dont hv a fenced in yard an we have alot of strays that passes in and out dogs as well as cats.. it bothers me to train them to go outside because i feel they are not full protected but the pad thing isnt going to well either.. the party is going to held at the city park(no dog parks) and i also dont know if all the pets invited are current on their vaccines either..should i have a cause to worry, or am i being over protecting..:aimeeyork |
i would personally not take them unless they had all their puppy vaccines...wouldn't want to risk anything... |
i agree didnt take cedric to anything social until he was fully vaccinated. |
I think it just depends on how much you want to risk. I, personally, do NOT keep dogs indoors until their fully vaccinated. That would mean they were 16 weeks old, or more, if you were to wait until the last shot kicks in or whatever. We've never kept our dogs indoors for that long and I can't imagine doing so. Jackson had sooo much socialization by then and had experienced snow, grass, mud, wind, dirt, rain, etc. I started potty training outdoors at 9 weeks old with him. However this was in our own yard. He was also around my family's dogs, since we lived with them. And I knew they were UTD on stuff. I wouldn't do any type of dog park thing, or pet store, etc, until pup vaccines are completed. I guess it depends on how many dogs are going to be there and if you know them all well enough to know they are healthy. |
I wouldn't risk it. Better to wait; I had a dog die of parvo years ago and wouldn't risk going through anything like that again. |
i know most of the owners But i dont know how well they protect their babies... my first mind say DO NOT bring them, and if i dont well i wont attend.. i'll bring a gift but i wont leave my babies alone at home unattended.. i would really like to socialize them more, but i cant take the risk.. as for as potty training outside, i would be faceing the same problem as to the fact that we have strays..i would rather know for certain they are protected than risk not being sure and something goes wrong. thx to all of u!!! |
Go with your gut instinct then. :) It's just something I've never worried terribly much about. But then again, I don't really that many vaccines in general anyways. He's had his (most likely) last shots at 1 year old, but of course we'll do rabies every 3 years per the law. |
We had no fence when we got Maggie, but we knew we wanted to have her potty outside. Looking back maybe we should have pad trained her so we could leave her alone longer, but we feel bad when we're gone long, so it probably wouldn't matter. Anyway, I went to Lowes or Home Depot in the fence or garden dept and got the plastic construction fence and a few poles. We made her a little potty spot so she couldn't run off. Eventually we got a small-3 foot high black iron fence that you install yourself. The temporary fence was good until we could decide what to do. You might try putting one up after a good cleansing rain and see how it works. This way you can start the grass training without waiting so long. |
great idea, thought about the xpen thing to, but i dont want to leave it outside afraid it will be stolen.. so i may just get the plastic fence and try that.. thx |
