DIY sanitary trim I've been growing out Lexie's coat since i cut off all her puppy hair a few months ago. Now her coat has gotten much longer especially in the back and around her lady bits. I know they're supposed to get sanitary trims at the groomers but since i do all her grooming myself i was wondering if anyone knows how to do one on a yorkie with a long/show coat . All the instructional videos i've seen the yorkies are either shaved or in puppy cuts. Thanks:aimeeyork |
I have no idea, I'm sure some of the others know since they do their own grooming. Would love to see pics of your Lexie and her long coat. |
I just trim it. I don't clipper it down. |
Did you try a site about showing yorkies for pics or maybe standards on haircuts? I can't picture long hair all around except the butt....Do you think they grow the hair long and then just clean every time they poo? Maybe a little ponytail on the hiny? I guess it depends on how long you intend to grow it. |
I just scissor about a 1-2 inch diameter circle around 'the spot' on the back side after a bath...it seems easier then while the hair is a bit wet. If there is a lot of growth further down and that little clip doesn't do it...and I am seeing a bit of that with Mia now, and a little messiness once in a while...maybe a little more trimming lower...toward the legs. I've been thinking maybe just a little thinning or a little more trimming back there but so that her tail and tail hair covers it. At most, you'd only need to do a strip about 1-2 inches wide straight down from the tail...which wouldn't look bad. That works on my friend's full (show) coated Shih Tzu. I've never done any trimming on the lady bits themselves...and only do very minimal trimming on Brody's boy bits. |

I'm laughing at y'all and "lady bits". I just trimmed CoCo's on Friday. Now, she doesn't have long hair, but she was getting a little messy, so I decided to trim her a bit. It was not hard, but again, she's just a baby and still has short hair. |
candigirl: Ty i just didn't want to do it wrong and have it to look obvious. i'll give it a try today after her bath :) I know the feeling...I worry about doing stuff wrong, too, and having it look bad because I schmucked it up...:p I didn't worry too much about 'that end' though 'cuz it's mostly other dogs who look 'there' and I've got a feeling there insterest has nothing to do with my grooming job or scissor clip. lol CoCos_Mom: I'm laughing at y'all and "lady bits". Yeah...lmao...I thought the 'lady bits' was fabulous and since it can be 'interesting' dancing around 'anatomical expression' I went with it, too! Kudos to candigirl for the excellent 'description"...lol Actually, neither Brody nor Mia has much 'there' for the trimming...but on the backs of the legs is where the mess tends to be...or on the longer tail hair, on the rare occasions there is a mess. |
i trim both my little boys and girl. just give it a quick trim with the siccors |
My groomer laughs if I end up trimming Bella up before an appt. I use moustash clippers till she is bald. LOL I guess if she had long hair, I would use hair clips and trim away. |

Bald, huh...lmao My kids won't let me near them with the little Wahl Groomsman beard and mustache trimmer..Mia runs like it's a hatchet...lol...and the head pivots, and it is cordless rechargeable, and it's got combs and a nice little case, and they don't care...don't give a rat$ a$$...lmao. Brody is finally to the point of condiitoning that I can put the 'wrong' end of the clipper on his back as a massager, but nowhere else. So, I already ordered an "Oster Finisher" trimmer because a breeder I was talking to loves the device for trimming ears...says it's great and you cannot cut them with it used properly..i.e. not to "V" the ear edges...which I scissor...just shave backs and fronts. I would like to have a nice quiet trimmer I can use for paws, and ears, and bums...lol Got a good deal on it...just over $40 delivered for an 'open-box' "Used" trimmer that was "never used" and just had the "box opened to make sure all the parts were there" in "New"/"Mint"/"Never Used" condition. Sears sells these online trimmers for $104......other places for about $60, so I hope it's really okay. Crazy what steps we bend to to keep them clean and neat...:D |
