Puppia harness question So I am looking to get Angel a harness and am stumped about the standard Puppia verses the vest style. I know you guys will have knowledge and opinions! What is the most secure and comfortable? |
I know that the step in vest harness sits lower on the chest and is less likely to press on the trachea if it is fitted properly. The regular one that is slipped on over the head goes up higher on the chest. |
HI I PREFER THE STEP IN VEST STYLE CAUSE I HATE PULLING ANYTHING OVER MY BABY'S EARS. THIS IS THE VEST I BUY. MY OSCAR IS 6.5 POUNDS 9" NECK 12" CHEST , I BUY THE XS AND IT FITS PERFECT.. Petco Wag-a-tude Turquoise Dot Dog Body Harness at PETCO |
You would need a Puppia size small to fit a 4.5 to 6 pound dog as their sizing is different than the Petco brand. |
don't like the puppia ones because the come too close to the trachea. Big fan of buddy belt as it goes no where near their throat and is well made and I also get good control with it |

I threw 3 Puppia step-in harnesses in the garbage! ZoE can easily escape it and did so in my front yard (I live on a main road) I figured I'd put the harness on wrong, so took her into the furthest part of my back yard (I'm on a few acres) and tested is again. Once more, she slipped right out of it by turning around to face me and quickly backing up. The harness slipped right over her front legs/shoulders and off her head. Into the garbage they all went that night! (I do have two regular Puppia over the head style harnesses, and I've never had a problem with them, other than ZoE outgrew them). We now use Buddy Belt harnesses and haven't had a single escape issue. |
I have a Puppia harness, not sure the exact style as it was a gift. We however love it for daily use and car rides. My Huckie is 8lbs and fits into a size small. |

i have never used the puppia brand so i can't vouch for that but i have always used the petco step in vest harness for oscar. It is very secure . I have never had a problem. Personally i think the buddy belts are way overpriced for a piece of leather.. Fortunately there are enough products out there for all of us to choose what works for us , huh ? P.S Your babies are sweet...... |
I have used the Puppia step in vest harness for Gracie since she was 6 months old. She was a puller at first and we never had a problem. I only take her out on a leash and that is the only time she wears the harness. The velcro does need to be adjusted so the vest is snugly against the body before closing the top clip. One time after a walk I did not take the harness off right away and she started to roll backwards on the floor and got it to slide up toward her head. I don't advise leaving a harness on except while walking the pet. The buddy belt is a good harness but kind of expensive for a puppy that is going to grow out of it. The Petco harness is much like the Puppia vest harness though sizing is different. There is a harness that is kind of like the buddy belt but a bit less expensive. The sizing is different also. I did find a knock off of the buddy belt, looked just like it but i did not like the fact that it had a snap holding in the chest area that holds it together. |

We have 2 of these, and they are great. http://www.chokefree.com/ They are made of strong leather, and they stretch and soften with wear. Roxie has never been able to get out of these. Plus, they come in a ton of cute colors and designs (not that style trumps safety, but it's nice to have a selection). We also have the seat belt adapter, which is awesome! |

Soft Leather Choke-Free Harness I see what you mean about the snap in the center of the chest...hmm...It's a great price, but I'd have to see it & feel it before I'd buy. I know the Buddy Belt is secure and strong. I feel confident lifting ZoE up by it when needed when we've encountered a large (uncontrolled) dog on our walks. |
Dori is 8 lbs. and wears a small standard Puppia. She has one in every color but PINK! She's not a girliegirl. We take it off at bedtime. |
