Is this normal? :confused:im new to the yorkie world, meaning i got my first one about a yr ago (cosmo) at the age of 8-9mths old, and my two newbies a week ago at 12 wks.. exploring the internet about, i have read about ears standing and floppy ears.. cosmo ears are erect, but the babies arent yet. should i tape them or let them do their own thing? secondly- i have also read about their thumb being cut off at 3wks old.. i have checked all three furbies and the new babies have had theirs cut, but cosmo still has his.. is that normal r should i have the vet cut it off, he is 20mths old now? |
I left Callie's ears how they where and they never stood but I love her floppy ears. I think what you are talking about is the dew claws and its before 3 weeks that they are cut off, they are cut off when the tails are docked. After they are a certain age they cant just be cut off the dog has to be anesthetized and then they have to be removed. |
I wish I knew the answers to your question, but I just got my dog 4 months ago when he was a year old, so I know nothing about that kind of stuff. |
THANK BOTH OF YA'LL ANYWAY for the input.. I just just didnt know if it would harm him in the long run by having his declaws..as for the babies ears, i will tape them eventually..ive seen floppy ears and they r cute, but i rather the standard yorkie look..lol |

We had Gwenni's dewclaws removed when she had her spay as her breeder hadn't removed them properly and they were beginning to cause harm. They really took a long time to heal and she had to wear a soft cone longer than I would have liked. If they aren't causing your babies any trouble I don't know if I would remove them. |

he is 20mths now and I dont think its bothering him, i just found out they were there lastnight due to the fact i didnt know they were suppose to be cut off, so i checked, and there they were.. i will try the ear trimming first and see if that will work before i do any taping. thx:) |
Hello and welcome to the wonderful world of yorkies! As far as the babies ears go, they may still stand up - I would give them some time without taping them - from what I have read on here - shoot, now I can't remember exactly and I am hoping someone can fill in the blanks but it has something to do with them teething.... As far as the dewclaws go, make sure you have the nails cut on those and keep an eye on them. If you don't regularly trim those nails they will grow around (in a circle like) and grow back into the skin. We had a sheltie and he was left with one dewclaw and if I didn't trim it regularly, it would start growing back into his skin. It may be something to discuss with your vet about having it removed. Good luck with your babies! |

i will thx! i may need to get them cut.. i really dont know if the vet has noticed them either because he has never said anything to me about it..hum, i wonder. |
My oldest yorkie has her dew claws on her front feet and has never had any kind of problem with them. It is very hard on them to have them removed if it is done when they get older. If your little guy hasn't had any problems with them yet, he may never have problems and if he does...you could deal with it then. |
Dew claws are normally removed when the tail is cropped, normally about the 3rd day after birth (or around that time). They can be removed later, of course, just ask your vet about it. If they are kept, just keep an eye on the nail length, it can cause problems if the nail gets too long, such as snagging and then getting torn, as well as problems with the nail getting too long and curving inward... Ect. Good luck! |
