Please tell me why dogs eat grass..... ....and does yours? Princess was kind of whining to go on the patio today, but I killed a wasp so I don't want her around the residual spray. It's gorgeous out so I took her outside on her lead for a bit. She was on a mission sniffing out something like a hound. Maybe the new Corgi, I don't know. But then she stops & starts eating the longer grass (I think it's crabgrass?). Usually if I tighten her lead she comes right away well I was practically pulling her away (slowly) & almost had to pick her up. We went across the yard & she started the sniffing then eating again. I've read before that it's thought they eat it to soothe an upset tummy, but she seems 100% fine. What are your thoughts? Is it ok to do this once in a while? Do you let your pup/s do it? |
the only time i have seen my princess eat grass was when she wasnt feeling well. cedric hasnt really eaten any that i have seen as of yet. that is what i heard as well pet md says it is not harmful but i havent done more research than that. |
I heard that they eat grass when they dont feel well. I think it encourages vomiting |
I think sometimes they just do it cause they are a yorkie and they have to put everything in their mouth and try it |

She's been acting fine & perky but we haven't went back out. I'm in a complex & don't want her licking & eating where other dogs venture. I've also read it causes vomiting & that the dog already has to vomit & the grass soothes. I don't know what the dilly-O is, but I'll be keeping an eye on her to make sure she doesn't get sick. :xfingers::hands: |
I heard it helps when their tummys aren't feeling well. When I first started to read the title of this post I thought it was going to say "Why do dogs eat cat poop" lol I was going to answer, a vet once told me it's like almond roca to them. :D Silly dogs. |
At least with Brandi it has been true, everytime she has had an upset tummy, she always goes straight for the grass. It's the only time she really eats grass. |

Brandi loves cat poop, it was probably causing her upset tummies. Now I positioned the litter box (which has a lid on it) so Brandi can't get to it but my very mean, anti-social cat can get to it. |
My dogs like to eat grass. They don't throw up after. They just like it. |

I agree with the others. I heard that dogs eat grass when their stomachs don't feel good. It is like a soother. |
I think Bailey does it because it's blowing in the wind and he likes chasing moving things. |
Please tell me why dogs eat grass..... Because mom isn't giving them salad?? :p Because they instinctively need chlorophyll?? Because it's like scratching up dirt and grass to cover their pee & poo & they don't know why they do it but it's just a carry over from their wild ancestors who had to do this to keep their area from being invaded by other animals??? Or maybe it's to aid in digestion??? Maybe all of the above???:D |
Tibbe occasionally eats some grass and once he did barf all of it up again and lay around for a couple of hours afterward with his tummy rumbling with gas and looking steadily at me(he expects me to fix everything and seems rather sad when I can't always). Usually I don't know why he eats it. |
