How old and/or how long after being home for first haircut?
 

Our pup is 15 weeks old. He has only been home for 2 days and is just getting settled. He LOVES being brushed. He will just completely zone out while I brush him and go down to sleep no problem.

How long should I wait to take him to the groomer? He is in quite the scruffy muffin state right now. I know part of it is just the awkward puppy stage but I also think he needs a little cleanup. Not sure if I should stress him again so soon. I also don't want to ruin how much he loves his at home grooming.

If he's that good, I'd never take him to the groomer, I'd groom him myself at home. Puppies are supposed to look kind of messy, lol.

Really should wait till a month after his last puppy vaccines are given.

I'd bathe him at home. I used to bathe Razzle when he was a pup in the kitchen sink. Get a pair of puppy clippers for his nails. You can buy biogroom shampoo at most pet stores.
Grooming your own dog is just another way to bond with them. Puppy coat is kind of messy and sticks out here n there - lol - it is supposed to.

My bigger dogs when they were puppies used to love to go in the shower with me. It could be pretty funny as every time I took a shower - they'd want in too!.

I'd want to bathe him until he has been home at least two weeks. And I'd wait to take him to the groomer (if I elect to do that) for at least another month or even six weeks.

Thanks! I was planning to do baths at home. I was thinking only haircut at the groomer. Sounds like we are ok to wait a while on that.

I agree with the other posters... I would wait a bit on taking him to the groomers. If I were you, I'd groom him myself! It sounds like he will take well to being groomed at home, and it will save you a ton of money and keep him away from the groomer if you do it yourself :)

I've seen a lot of people get horrible haircuts from groomers, so I'd rather mess up their hair myself than pay for someone else to mess it up :p

Well, first you need to find a really good groomer. A lot of people have had bad experiences with groomers. It's not as easy to find a good one as you would think. If you don't already know one then you need to check out a few places. Get some references. Make sure you don't have to leave him there all day and make sure the groomer has attended an accredited school and has a license. Decide what you want done. Like what exactly you want done to him. Make sure the groomer agrees to do exactly what you want. Many people have left specific directions and come back to find the groomer has done the exact opposite. I guess that is why so many people have started grooming their dogs themselves. Gracie was around 5 months when she first went to the groomer.

I do take Gracie to the groomer every couple of months because she has a long coat and I am terrible at making it even at the edges and around her face. I bathe and trim her up between her trips to the groomer. There is a grooming section here on YT that should give you some tips about what you can do at home. I am glad I have a groomer I can depend on when I need her but it's expensive so I am also glad that I can keep her looking good between trips. My groomer considers her place a "spa" for pets and does a great job but many groomers just 'bathe and shave" and don't know much else. Groomers that have been trained in grooming show dogs are usually very experienced and know how to do a good job. You still need to know that they are kind to the pets and will do what you request. Just be very careful.
