little yorkie i have a female yorkie puppy that is 8 1/2 months old. we had purchased her from a breeder who is also a vet. when we purchased her the vet said she would include spaying her and installing a micro chip in her. we took her to have her procedures done last week and the vet refused to do them because of her weight. she did not want to put her under. she is 1.8 lbs. i know that that is small but man. she ran all kinds of test on her and everything came back normal. we were told when we bought her to expect her to be around 4 lbs. when grown. i don't see it. she eats well, acts frisky like a yorkie. has anyone ever had one this little? my last one was 3.5 lbs. and i thought that was small. i know people like to throw around that name tea-cup (and i know there is supposed to be no such thing) but this girl is a thimble. |
Does the vet think she will gain anymore weight? I can't remember but I feel like Georgie was around 2-2 1/2 lbs at her age and he is close to 4lbs now. |
Welcome to Yt. Goodness, your baby is a house mouse isn't she. I agree with the Vet. about not spaying her at this weight. Is she a normal weight, or does the Vet. think she's under weight? You could start giving her med. rare red meat, rice and steamed veggies. I'd be trying like crazy to get some weight on her for sure. |

That is small. What were the weights of the parents? I believe they like a pup to be at least two pounds before they spay them. What are you feeding? Does your puppy eat well? |

Poor tiny thing...I bet she's cute (and as small as) a button though! Would love to see some pics! She definitely should be like 4lbs before getting spayed...the anesthesia is much harder on the little ones. My girl is already bigger than yours and she's only 12 weeks! |
oh another thing i might add for what its worth. she still has not had a heat cycle and has only lost one puppy tooth. a back tooth. |

Wow. Poor baby. I bet she is a sweety though. I'm guessing if she is eating well and playing and everything else is well, then maybe she will just be a tiny baby. I wouldn't over feed her. That could cause problems as well. I think you know your dog, and it seems as if you're doing the right things for her, so go with your gut and what is good for your baby. Please post pics of you can, and keep us posted on her progress. |

I guess I'm kind of amazed that a vet would be breeding a dog that small. It just is so risky and could have grave consequences for the mother and it certainly is not doing any favors for the puppies. I hope you can get you puppy's weight up. Hopefully they gave you some suggestions about increasing her calorie intake. The slow growers usually grow a little longer than the average so she may not reach her mature weight until a few months after her first birthday. |
Roxy never had a heat before I spayed her. My vet said she had to be 3 pounds first. |

I bet she is just too precious! I have a friend that works in a vet clinic in Odessa, and she just had her tiny little female spayed with absolutely NO problems....I was a crazy wreck out of worry, but she said they do it all the time! I WOULDNT HAVE ONE OF MINE DONE THAT LITTLE....I DONT LIKE PUTTING 3# OR LESS UNDER ANESTHESIA...IT MAKES ME NUTS.....I would let her gain weight before I had her surgery...these tinies often are late starters with their heat cycles, so just hang with her and then have her spayed when she gains weight! |
