Food suggestions... Since charlies surgery he doesn't seem to have his normal appetite. He'll eat cheese and I put his pain pill in a piece of a hot dog and he'll scarf that, but not his normal dog food. He's not touching it. I am not going to just give him cheese and hot dogs because I know that can't be good. Just looking for healthy alternatives he may like until he's 100% again. Maybe raw?? Or should I just not feed him knowing he'll eat when he's hungry enough? I feel its the pain meds curving his appetite for his normal dog food. |
I think it may be the cheese and hotdogs that may be curbing his appetite. Maybe if you can get him a soft treat or even peanut butter/ plain yogurt to put his treats in it'll be better. But, assuming there is nothing medically wrong with him not eating, it sounds like his holding out for some more cheese and hot doggies :) |
I have always found that a scrambled egg (with no milk) has always helped to jump start an appetite. I mix most of it in their kibble, then hand feed them a couple of bites of egg and then show them the bowl with egg/kibble. I will sometimes crack the kibble, too, so that it's smaller pieces and easier for them to eat. The other thing that nearly never fails me is, I put them and the bowl on the counter for them to eat from.:p Whenever I have one that is getting a special diet for a little while, I feed them on the counter so that the others can't get to the food. This has developed a firm thought in all their heads that only "special" food is served this way. Whenever they see me fix something and take the bowl to "the special place" and put a towel down, they all get freaking excited to see who's going to be the lucky pup. :D |

The eggs worked like a charm. At first he tried to get around the kibble but i made sure to mix more kibble than egg. After the egg was gone he finished off the kibble. :) |
My new foster gets wet food, and my two go berzerk for the 'new' wet food. I know my two would eat anything if it had wet food on it. Does Charlie get wet food? I mix the tiniest little bit on C and K's kibble, and they mow down. |
