Important: Please everyone read I had a very interesting call from one of my puppy parents who told me a story about her boy that is almost a year old. She said they were playing ball with the dog in the living room. After countless times of throwing the ball it rolled under the couch. The dog went behind the couch to retrieve it and they left the room for a few mins. When they can back the dogs was no where to be seen and didn‘t come with they called his name. They pulled out the couch and there laid the dog with an electric wire in his mouth DEAD. Her husband is a Dr and check the dog, he had no heartbeat. He started massaging the chest and she said it was about 45 mins before they located and got to an emergency vet. Her husband kept massaging the dogs chest the whole way and as they pulled in the vets the dog started to stir a little. The vet finish working on the dog and he came around. Other then a scorched mouth the dog she said seems to have not suffered any ill effects. The reason she called me is she wanted me to know what happened and to also pass along to others to not give up on a dog to soon when something like this happens. Now, had this been someone else I would have thought the dog was just stunned but with her husband being a Dr. I’m sure he would know stunned from dead. He did not do mouth to mouth just chest massage. I do explain to all my puppy parents about the importance of keeping a close eye on dogs to guard against chewing electric cords but now will also tell them what to do if something like this does happen and it may just save the dogs life. I hope you too will pass this along in other groups, to your puppy buyers and any pet owners you may know !! |

OMGoodness! I am so glad their baby survived that horrible ordeal. It could have easily gone the other way. Thank you for the information. It is easy to overlook what small spaces they can get themselves into and the dangers they may face there. |
Good info to have and I cannot imagine the horror those people went through until that baby began to stir and show life signs. Here's hoping there is no brain damage as the man probably started compressions within the few minutes there are before the brain is oxygen starved. |

Glad he ending up being ok. My dad gave our goat mouth to mouth and saved him after he hung himself in a hay feeder he wasn't down long a couple minutes but had some brain damage he walked funny for the rest of his life and a few other things so its awesome if the dog didn't have any brain damage. |

Thanks for sharing!! I had pens for my little ones when they were very young and I wasn't home. I found one chewing a cord to a lap top (not plugged in) so I really worried about that!! |
Our case was a little different. My Shorkie Zoe was in the back yard playing with our Yorkie Zach. All if a sudden they both started screaming Zoe's teeth got caught on Zach's collar and she was tossing him around by his neck. When I finally got the collar cut off and we laid Zach on the table his eyes were rolled back in his head and his tongue was blue and hanging out of his mouth. I was sure he was dead. I picked him up and turned him over and he started coming around. We took him to the emergency vet. By the time we got there he had fully come around. They took xrays and a radiograph and told us that he had no permanant damage but to watch out for CT in the future. WOW!!!! What a story! I have caught CoCo chewing on a cord here and there, and I have to make sure that my children pay attention to that too! Wow......good info to know. |
He was a very lucky dog to have lived through being shocked like that !! I was a little suprised that a dog of his age still wanting to chew on things. I do recommend everyone who buys a puppy to get an x-pen to keep them safe when they can't keep a close eye on them. |
Thank you for posting the warning and the encouragement not to give up on a pet who appears dead. This is one reason I make sure Gracie has safe things to chew on so she will not be tempted to chew something that could very well kill her. There is just day that we can take for granted the safety of these babies. In the past I did show and breed Himalayan cats that sometimes would have difficulty in birthing. Sometimes a kitten would be born appearing to be dead. I would have the heating pad handy, clear the airway, give them mouth to nose ventilations and very light chest compressions. I was able to save all but one and that one had been dead for a while before it was delivered. I was a paramedic and a nurse but I would say my paramedic training was more helpful in those cases. I agree. It is possible to restart a heart and get the lungs working again in some cases. |

Very true, ive been there!!! when i first got cosmo at around 8-9mths old, my kids and step kids were all out playing with him in the yard.. harmless i thought on my part being a first time mom to a very small furby.. ive had dogs before but they were all poodles. every once in a while i would check on them as i prepared lunch, not long afterwards my hubby came in asking for the furby.. i answered saying they were all outside, apparently they had gotten tired of playing with cosmo and decided to tie his leash to our pourch.. we found him hanging, tongue hanging out, eyes rolled back, and poop dripping from his butt.. i frozed screaming and crying.. my hubby stepped in taking control of the situation. thinking he was dead, i had a one track mind, i just needed him to know i was sorry. i picked him up, rubbing and massaging him like he was still living..(not knowing wut i was doing) i kept doing it.. my hubby and kids were trying to talk to me but they were tuned out completly. they even tried to take cosmo from me, but i wouldnt let him go.. after a few min (30) i was told, i felt cosmo flinch in my arms.. i thought it was me at first so i paid it no attention till he did it again.. then he sucked his tongue in, but his eyes were still glossy.. i yelled for the keys an off we went to the vet, luckily he made a full recovery..now i dont let him out of my sight, unless we r sleeping..lol..or i'm at work.. i will not allow anyone to play with him outside of my view, nor walk him.. i know that is another reason y he is so spoiled, but idk.. yorkies are miracles in my eyes..its my selfish belief that, he knew i loved him, and he wanted a chance to love me back, an he is..YORKIE LOVER FOR LIFE |
I'm glad and sorry there is someone out there who has seen their furbaby with their eyes rolled back in their head and their tongue hanging out. It's the most horrifying thing to see. After that all collars were removed and now they wear harnesses when they go out and they never go out alone even in a fenced in back yard. I thiink that was a warning from upstairs for both Cosmo and Zach. |
