What to do w/ one descended testicle? Hello! My Wylie has ony ONE descended testicle - he is 9 months old and I think he may be beginning to mark territory (indoors!). The vets are unable to tell if he only has just the one testicle or if the 2nd testicle is just somewhere else (ie abdomen). I guess I have 2 choices: 1) neuter the one testicle and be done with it -or- 2) neuter the one plus have abdominal surgery to search for the other testicle (much more major surgery). I've had differing opinions from different vets on which way to go. Some say "he probably only has one - don't risk the abdominal surgery" ; others say "don't run the risk of leaving a testicle inside of him, it can cause health problems later". Has anyone faced this decision? Do any of the breeders have advice? THANKS for any help! Ann |
Testicle Cannot they do an ultrasound or xray to find out if there is another one in the abdomen? It seems to me that would be the way to go, you cannot really make a decision until you find out. Ask your vet, they can take an xray to see if they have swallowed something, or have a broken bone, they use ultrasounds for diagnosis of many things, that is what I would ask the vet to do before I made a decision. |
ok my friends pug had this when they neutered him they reached up a little and took it out it should not be a big surgery i think you should get a different opinion |
you know, my vet had a clause in the nuetering contract that said if toby only had one testicle they were going to charge extra because they had to look for the other one, i think it was only another $20, the neutering costs 30 so IF he had only one it would have cost $50...... i dont thinks its that big of a surgery.... do you trust your vet???? also, some dogs are born having only one testicle (i think that was mentioned elsewhere on here too) |
orinskye is right they charged him alittle more too |
I know, I know! :animal-sm My Jackson just had the same thing. My vet said he would probably have to do 2 surgeries and a sonogram. I did not like the sound of that! So I called 4 different vets! All 4 agreed (without seeing him) that all dogs have 2 testicles and they always find them. All said a sonogram is a waste of time and way to charge extra money. I finally decided to leave my vet and chose one who was trained at University of Pennsylvania. She examined him and told me should could feel it in his thigh. She did the surgery a week later and she made 2 tiny incisions. He went home the same day! But it cost me plenty as I live in CT and everything costs so much here! It was about $500. :( |
