It is that time again.. My 3 dogs went to the vet and had their heartworm 3dx test, all negative. Yay ! My vet did ask me if i want them to have the lyme vaccine cause their have been a few cases in my area. They are all on k9 Advantix II my concern is for little oscar . I do not want to overload him . Do any of you give your yorkies the lyme vax ? Ever any bad reactions to it? |
My Wally just had his first dose of the lyme vaccine. It is given in 2 doses. He goes next week for the last one. He had no reaction at all. He is 5lbs and 2-1/2 yrs old. My vet said it is going to be a hard summer on them because it wasn't cold enough here to kill them off. |
We have lyme's in our area and Levi was diagnosed with it two years ago. I have both of mine vaccinated now and neither had any issues. Levi is 10 lbs and Lily is 4.5 pounds. |
I agree our Winter hasn't been cold enough to kill anything off, I will see what my vet has to say about mine getting it... |
No, I don't give it. It's only 60-70% effective. Plus it's easily treated with antibiotics. A tick has to be on the dog for at least 24 hours in order to transmit the disease. LYME--Vaccinate or Not? - Dog Chat - Dog Forums - I-Love-Dogs.com Dr. SchoenLyme Disease: Fact from Fiction |
I get Lyme for Callie and she has never had a problem with it and my mom also gets it for her yorkie Sammy and no problems there either. We have had a terrible tick problem here and the tiny ticks so I decided to get it even if it might not work 100% but at least they are protected some. Lyme can be painful for them so I would like to try to guard against it as much as possible. |
Thx everyone, since we have had several cases in my area my vet suggested they are tested every year and i think i will also get the vax .. |
I have always had at least one indoor cat but since we have been living in this place that is back in the woods I have taken on the care of several abandoned and feral cats. Some are strictly outdoor and some are indoor/outdoor. I have already found ticks on them. Imagine, March and live ticks! Anyway, it has been a real problem for the last 3 years. What I have read of the Lyme vaccine has not been encouraging. Gracie is only allowed out on a leash and we do not go into the tick areas. I comb the cats with a flea comb when they come in so that I can catch any unattached ticks they may have. We do not have reported cases of Lyme in our area. Cases of Lyme that have been reported were infected when people went to other areas (usually on vacation) I read one report that said the vaccine is not 100% effective and that reactions are quite frequent. One scientist said it is safer to treat a Lyme infection than to vaccinate against it as Lyme is easily treated with antibiotics. Everyone has to decide according to the conditions in their own life and the area they live in. |
