Please remember it's high activity time for coyotes
 

The spring is the coyotes' highest activity time. After a long winter they are now in their mating season. I just let my three pups out for their last potty of the night. I always stay out with them at night carrying my flashlight. Funny thing, Dude didn't want to go but Bogey and Pebbles ran out immediately to pee. Then I heard them......coyotes doing their calling! :eek: It's like they talk to each other and I could tell they were just a few house down from us in the open field. It's not like I live in the sticks either. We live in a village of 70,000 people. Please be very careful. All I had to do was shake their treat jar and they all bolted indoor but you just never know. :(

well thanks goodness we don't have any coyotes near my home but we do have
hawkes and fishers, just as bad i guess.
my dogs never go outside alone...

This is a very good reminder. It is mating season for all of the preditors and the will be hungry. Also remember that this is the time of the year that snakes are hatching,venom from a baby snake is just as deadly. I live in the city but we still have coyotes,hawks and all kinds of snakes. Keep your grass short!!

Actually Rattler babies have more venom. In fact, they are more pugnacious than the adults. Adults are able to control the amount of venom when they bite and babies are not- they give you all of it.

Also be cautious of anything moving in the trees! We should be scared of Owls. I read an article on them. An hawk while sitting on a rock, if you start walking up to them they will move- An owl sitting in a tree is not seen or heard you can be right underneath it and the owl will stay there. Then it will try to swoop down and take your dog-

Owls are larger- they are able to carry more weight, An hawk depending on size can only carry smaller animals, like like field mouse, and sometimes if small enough squirrels.

A hawk will only catch what he can eat, they do not like to waste food, however an Owl will catch something larger than what he can eat and leave it there.

When hawks attack they like to have a level swooping area- They are not really good at short kills, if they do "have" to they will usually not fly away with it, they will eat it where it killed. Owls can swoop down on short distances.


The article I read, studied Owls and Hawks, he said we should be aware of hawks, but Owl are far more dangerous.

They are in all 50 states so please never doubt they are near you. Coyotes are highly adaptable and have been found in Central Park in NYC as well as Lincoln Park downtown Chicago. They can live on a golf course, cemetery, even your local park. Just because you do not see them doesn't mean they are not around. A good indication is when the sirens in your area go off, so do the coyotes.

Very scary! We have them too and we are in a city!!

Question....are all the animals voices in your recording coyotes? Do dogs join in to the howls?

There are probably many pregnant female coyotes around right now. They are hungry and will attack. Make sure you don't leave garbage outside even in cans. The scent attracts smaller prey that will in turn attract coyotes. If you cook outside clean up your grill and take everything that has any food scent inside. These are things that bring coyotes into neighborhoods.

We have huge owls. They are silent. When I have been outside on sunny mornings I have had shadows move over my head. I look up and see a huge owl landing on a branch nearby. I once thought that owls were asleep once the sun came up but, no, they are still awake and hunting. I won't walk Gracie until 10 or 11:00 AM and never at dusk.

We have had a huge hawk move into the area. The birds get all upset when he is near here. I don't know how daring they are but he is big enough to do some damage to a little dog or cat. At least the smaller birds make a lot of noise so I know when he is out there.

I hear the coyotes at least 2 to 3 times a night....normally between 2:00 to 4:00 in the morning....also have a neighborhood halk that sits on top of a telephone pole and owls that you can hear hooting at early morning....my lil one only goes out during the middle of the day when I am with her....

I feel sorry for the poor kitties that people put out for the night. Bet most don't live to be very old.
My girls never go outside without me. We use to have "Mr. Hootie" in the neighbors tree every night, but he must have gone off to find better hunting.
Lots of critters out there that we need to be aware of that's for sure.

No prob, the article I read was really interesting- the guy who wrote it studied them for years! I honestly never thought about Owls, I was always watching for hawks! It is always good to educate yourself esp on protecting our small babies!!

I feel sorry for them, too. Last year, my neighbor was quite happy about a kitty that came to live at their house. They had her spayed, but she was not allowed in the house. She was a mouser. He couldn't figure out what happened to her, but I could imagine. Coyotes! We live outside the city limits in an addition.

Just the other morning before it was really light I saw a coyote run through the very southern part of my lawn and then another. They ran around my neighbor's house and then back in the direction from which they came and they are very fast! It was quickly becoming lighter and I saw three of them running in a meadow about a quarter of a mile west of here.

I tried to run one off with my riding mower when I was mowing after dark (with the headlights on) and I suppose the lights blinded him, but he wasn't scared of the mower at all! He just kept standing there in my yard! Finally, he left. Kacee's fenced yard is just a small portion of the whole yard. I never let her out in it without me being there with her, either.

Another neighbor counted 23 coyotes going through the addition in a pack once.
