Biter baby Im feeling a but frustrated because i cant get cocoa to play or snuggle or even really get near her without being chewed on and those teeth hurt. I have tried everything from holding her mouth gently saying no bite putting her in crate to calm down, giving her a toy, getting up and leaving, barking lol..Pretty much tried it all and she is a puppy but noone can sit and play or hold her or anything which she wants and deserves. I dont want to never spend time or not play but i feel like the only way i can is if i let her and that only makes it worse in the long run. Am i the only person that has or had an overly mouthy yorkie and cant get them to understand no bite! Also quit playing the tugging your toy game fearing this was teaching her to be more aggresssive. |
This may sound silly, but I guarantee you will be amazed... Act like a Momma Dog and growl at her... you may have to try a few different sounding growls, but you will find one that will stop her in her tracks... then work on teaching her English (or the language of your choice).:D |
What I have found effective in teaching puppies not to bite is to just say "ouch" loudly. It stops them dead in their tracks...and they do catch on if you are consistent. |

Sally was mouthy, too. I yelp, and then either put her down or walk away. She's getting the idea that bite=no play. I've also read that bitter apple on your hands or whatever can be helpful. And I saw this on TV for kids to put butter on their hands. It apparently encourages licking rather than biting. Worth a try. |
I would diffently try the growl, "OUCH", that has worked on dogs with me in the past. After the "OUCH" I would say, "No Bite". Her being a puppy doesn't help, she just wants to chew. Good luck. |
Thanks i tried both last night and today growling and saying ouch and no bite she sometimes stopped and looked at me but then immediatly went back to it. If i remove my hands she jyst goes for my legs and toes. I have no found the bitter spray yet we live in a smaller town. I just got up and walked away. I hate not being able to play with her and i know she needs to chew but she might bite a tiny kid. She also is getting matted on her legs because i cant get her brushed unless of course i let her chew a hole in my hand while im doing it. I feel like im doing something wrong because its gone way beyond puppy chewing |
Everytime she chews on something she should not chew on, give her a chew toy. Just keep doing it and she will get the idea. Just takes time. :) Don't leave her with a tiny child until she is past this stage! :) |
We did have lots and lots of toys for Maggie to chew on. I think it helps redirect the chewing urge so you will need to go shopping! Get a variety of textures and shapes. |
I would suggest a heavy pair of gloves when playing with her, maybe even oven mitts:D:D:D |

OK, LOL seriously though it might not be a bad idea to wear some gloves, often something like that will make the dog a little nervous and they might want to avoid attacking the hands if they are covered up by something thick like a pair of wool gloves or garden gloves. Good luck:) |

I had this problem with Thor and I started yelling OWWWW and he would stop and look at me as if to say what is wrong. He finally got the idea that he was not suppose to bite me. Now that he is older he plays get the hand with me and when I say OWW he stops right away. None of the other dogs have this problem and my pups are still with their Mom and they will be a year old soon. |
