I'm new here! Intro & newbie questions Hi everyone! I hope this is the right place to post an introduction. I have been lurking around, learning for a little while now. Just officially joined the group a few days ago. We are prepping to adopt a yorkie. Right now we're waiting for the right rescue pup to come into our lives and getting the house ready for a new little one. Anyway, just wanted to say hello. I still have lots of questions but hopefully the search feature will be my friend so that I'm not repeating old threads. :) In the meantime, if anyone feels like answering some newbie questions: ---what was your crate/xpen/bed arrangement? Right now we have a soft side travel bag and an xpen. Is that good for a pup or do we need a true crate as well? I was thinking if we end up with a really young one, we could put the travel bag inside the xpen to make it cozy. Good idea or no? ---what are your dogs favorite treats? Want to have something good on hand so that training gets off to a good start. ---do you know of any info online regarding yorkie health. Specifically, DH is worried that a rescue dog will have lots of health concerns. So far he has polled 3 people he knows with yorkies and they all have some sort of "issue". I was hoping to ease his mind with some stats like only 3% of yorkies end up with diabetes or only 4% have ct. Any help is appreciated and thanks for all of the super useful info I've already gathered around here. |
Welcome to YT! Personally, we just use a small crate/kennel for bed. Also since she's never left home alone for more than 2 hours we just put her in there when either we leave for a bit or she can't be supervised (ie, like when I'm cooking dinner or taking a shower). Mainly this is for house training reasons, plus being a small puppy she could get into trouble without supervision. Once she's trained and bigger, she'll have more freedom and the kennel will just be her bed. Good luck! I hope you find your perfect yorkie soon!! |
Hi and Welcome to YT. Have you checked out the national organization www.ytca.org, you can go to the health information section; although I don't think they post % rates per various types of conditions. Now rescue dogs have the b enefit of being fully vetted prior to placement, and any health conditions are usually known to the legitimate rescue, and fixed if it is a condition which can be fixed. Some common conditions Yorkies are prone to are'; 1) Luxating Patella of various degrees of severity 2) Collapsed Trachea 3) Liver Shunt. Now of these three with an older Yorkie rescue, all these conditions would likely be known if present. Good luck with your search, and it is always advisable to plan financially for your Yorkie through either pet insurance or a pet savings account of some nature. |
