singleton puppy
 

I contacted my breeder yesterday and we have a little girl. She was thinking two puppies but its only one. My question is about singleton puppies. How are singleton puppy socialized? Are their personalities different because they don't have any litter mates? I read somewhere that they may be larger which doesn't bother me. I never wanted a tiny. I just want her to be breed standard. Are there any health issues with having only a singleton? My breeder saids she is newborn and she appears to be healthy. At want age are puppies evaluated by the vet? Is there a critical period after birth that I should be concerned with? Sorry for my rambling. I am just so thrilled and anxious!

She didn't do xrays before the pup was born to see how many pups there were? Couldn't that be dangerous.

I don't know if she had xrays done or not. I didn't ask.

I am guessing she did not or she would have known it was going to be just one puppy. This would concern me about what other corners she may have cut to save money.

I have gotten references. She is on the YTCA referral list and holds office in a YT club. I really don't think she is cutting corners. In fact I have PM two individuals here and received positive feedback from the two individuals here. As I stated I am not sure if x rays were done. Previously she did indicate that the mother was not as large this time and they were expecting two. Are x rays always 100%? I will continue to feel positive about my decision because she seems to be a wonderful person and not deceptive at all. I have been waiting since last year to get a puppy from her. I am truly hopeful and thankful.

I have a singleton pup and she is just a wonderful dog. (Her breeder did have a couple other pups from a different litter that she played with though.)
She's smart as all get out and weighs 5 lbs. She's now 3 yrs old and no health issues.

I have a friend who took her girl in for x-rays and the vet didn't see any pups and told her it was a false pregnancy...her girl ended up having a singleton. So even with x-rays it isn't 100% accurate. I have also read her on YT where there was a pup that was hidden on x-rays and the litter ended up being bigger than x-ray showed.

Then how do you know that the dog has had all the puppies?

I am assuming when the dog is taken to the vet after giving birth.

my beloved nika was a singleton pup. she was delivered by c-section. as a full grown adult she weighed 5 pounds, although when she was born, she was a little larger than the norm. we gave her a little fish cat toy (without catnip) that she accepted as her littermate. plus, her mommy played with her and of course she got all of her mommy's attention. she was very well socialized despite not having a littermate. she did have some health problems, (allergies, pancreatitis) but they were not related to her being a singleton pup.

I have confidence in this individual. She has been breeding for over 20 years. I feel sure she is not cutting corners especially with the well being of her yorkies. I have spoken to some individuals who spoke well of her and she doesn't even know that I spoke to them. So I know it wasn't a scam. As I mentioned earlier, I didn't ask about any xrays and we never discussed xrays. She did tell me that mom and pup are doing well and I pray that continues. The mom had no difficulties delivering.

An x-ray is only as good as the person reading it! Depending on when the x-ray was done, there could have been another baby that was reabsorbed...could have been a "shadow"....it would have been evident pretty quickly if there was a retained puppy.....she more than likely took her momma and infant in for newborn checkup/post whelping exam, as her references appear more than suitable.....

:thumbup::thumbup: qualified breeders and their qualified VETS are the only ones qualified to know if an xray is warrented! Besides, we don't even know if one or 2 or even 3 xrays WERE done! That comment was all speculation.

As much as we YT members think we know from reading here.....we are not experts......

Congrats!!!! I know how excited you are :) You asked about socializing, I don't have any experience with singleton pups but I do have an older dog (non-yorkie) who was part of a litter and now due to my lack of knowledge isn't a very social dog. She tolerates her sister (my yorkie Chloe) but has fear of other dogs because I failed to socialize her. I would think that provided you take your little one out for walks and allow her to sniff and check out other (friendly) dogs she should be fine. Due to circumstances beyond my control my 1st dog didn't get the walks that she should have for learning social skills. Also Petsmart has doggie daycare if you don't have friends with dogs which will give your little girl the opportunity to develop her doggy social skills.

I wouldn't worry about her vet visits until she is home with you. You have said that your breeder is good so she will insure that your little girl gets the vet care needed. Once you take her home at 12+ weeks of age you need to take her to see your vet. All good breeders allow you a time period usually 72 hours to have your pup checked out for health issues and offer a 1 year health guarentee.

If she is your first yorkie I highly recommend reading about caring for your yorkie pup. There is great info here on YT. There are specific health concerns such as hypoglycemia that you need to be aware of prior to bringing baby home.

I hope I did not offend anyone I just know nothing about breeding so thought there had to be an xray or you wouldn't know when she was done having pups I have no idea that right after they go to the vet for a check and stuff. Sorry learn stuff everyday.

Thanks for all of your feedback. I did pick up a few books on yorkies. I currently have a bichon furbaby but I have never had a yorkie before. Yes I am so thrilled and nervous. The new kid on the block is doing well so far:) and I pray this continues. The reason I say this is because we all know there is a higher power that controls everything. Even the best breeder can't guarantee things will go perfectly.

My blue born Mack brown was a singleton pup... He had no problem adjusting and learned socialization from his momma... I think perhaps he was even more spoiled being a single pup... All eyes were always on him!!! We never had issues with biting, etc... Although he was a fatty while nursing, he has leveled out at almost 5 pounds... He turned one last month... Congrats on your new baby!! It's going to Seem like forever till you get her home!!!
