Question for breeders I am looking for another yorkie and I was wondering if the weight of the parents matters. Does dad need to weigh more than the mom or the other way around? Or does it really matter at all? Thanks |
Mom should be a least 5 pounds. |

So from experience I can say it does not madder what size they are. You are more likely to get smaller pups if you have smaller female and male. Typically the female should be of equal weight or larger. |
Parents play a role in the weight of the puppies, but so does the grandparents and greatgrandparents, is all in the genetic code, I have puppies that were produced from my 8.9 pounds male and my 10 pound girl, both silky terriers, that range in weight from 6 pounds all the way to 15 pounds, so parents weight is not a reliable source, I tell that to my posible adoptive parents, hugs, |
Carmen is right the parents size plays a small roll in the offsprings size. You have to look at what is in their background. It is especially important to do research on the background of a pup you are getting for breeding. The percentages of the part the ancestors play is greater if there is linebreeding or inbreeding in the peds. This is why breeders stress the importance of research. |
Pedigree research is what will give you an educated guess of what a breeding pair will throw.....and you can go for several years with the SAME pair, throwing just what you "know" they will throw, then all of a sudden, you will get a "throwback" that is a major weight outlyer....God just showing you who is REALLY in control of this breeding thing! Size of the female is important so that you do not cause your momma major problems. |
I forgot to say something very important: this is why you find a reputable breeder....it takes YEARS to study lines and pedigrees, and you have to trust her to know what she is doing. Pedigree research and knowledge of lines is not something you pick up over the weekend! This takes YEARS of study! |
