My Yorkie Attacked me! Hi. I am new to this site but already have a situation with which advice would be highly appreciated. My fiancée and I live together and she is over 8 months pregnant. My dog is very protective of her to the point that earlier when I tried to tell him to go to bed he started being aggressive and bit me several times. But then my fiancee simply walked him to his bed and he stayed there as if nothing had happened. Can anyone shed any light please? Thank you. |
You said it yourself.... he's very protective of her! I'm mot sure how bad the situation is or if you feel that this was a one time thing of that it may continue. My advise would be for you to go about your day to day routine, and to approach him as if nothing had happened. Do not in any way show fear or aggression toward him. Try to become his only care taker when you are home. As in feeding, walks, takeing him out to potty, anything and every thing to do with his care. Once he knows that you are in charge of his daily needs he will hopefully be more submissive toward you. Be sure that your fiance is not babying him in any way...that in itself can cause big problems. You should become the one that is showing him extra affection including offering him treats for good behavior, until he understands that you are the leader in your home. It's your girlfriend's dog. I would say that since he minds her then she needs to be the one to call the shots. If the dog showed you aggression then he read your signals as being a threat. Watch how your girlfriend handles him and try to do the same without being threatening. He is submissive to her because she is his leader and you have not yet earned the respect that she has. Don't try to take that part over without winning his respect first. You will never overcome aggression with aggression. |
Hi and Welcome to YT! Dogs pick up on human hormonal changes... when the baby arrives things should get back to normal, or a 'new' normal, lol. Her hormones may be triggering him to be extra protective at this time... |

If it is a temperament issue and not just a unique situation it would be best to get it under control NOW before you have a baby on your hands. Believe me, if your furbaby attacks your real baby -- it is not a great day. My daughter was bitten at 1 by my fiance's dog (in the face) she was standing around doing nothing and the dog got nervous. It was a trained dog who was 6 years old. She has a permanent scar above her lip that stretches as she gets older :( Maybe try some training classes with just the two of you? Or the three of you with your fiance as more of a side helper? |
