not exactly new to yorkietalk, but new yorkie owner!
 

Hey guys,
I signed up for the site ages ago when I first started looking at yorkies but ended up putting off getting one due to financial issues. Well looks like I'm finally going to get my new baby :) I'm picking her up tomorrow afternoon! I'm really excited, and can't seem to sleep so here I am :P

I've never had a dog with a coat like a yorkie (or any vaguely long coat at all to be honest) and was wondering what kinds of brushes and combs I'll need, as well as recommendations on shampoos. Also a lot of the articles I've read on grooming them sound like you have to blow dry them. Is that needed with a puppy cut? Any tips on getting them used to the dryer? Seems like it would scare them... How often do you guys have your yorkies proffesionally groomed? Really any tricks you guys have come across would be great. I'm really new to the grooming stuff :)

I use a comb and a pin brush and a slicker brush. I blowdry them after baths as with long coats they seem to stay wet forever and I'm afraid they will catch a chill. They do get used to the noise from the dryer. I like Biogroom products, and heavy on the conditioner! I groom mine myself.

Welcome back!! I would recommend a Madan pin brush. My two eventually got used to the blow dryer and even seem to enjoy it.

congradulations on your new yorkie puppy! Your going to have so much fun with her. When they are puppies they remind me so much like human babies, they love to play and stay close to their owners , a yorkie is the best dog in the world. They do get use to a blowdyer. I found a small one by Comair and use the warm setting, always have their coat wet before grooming. The blow dryer I use is not loud at all and both my dogs tolerate the sound. It is best to start grooming when they are young so they become use to it, yorkies require a lot of grooming just to keep them matt free and looking beautifiul.

I've been doing my own grooming for over 50 years and have found for my four Yorkie girls that a pen brush that has the molded round tips, and not those that are added on, are best no matter the brand. I bought all of mine at Wal-Mart. Then you will need a pin brush to get the mats out if your girl gets them. A little comb with teeth that are close together, for the face and under the eye, and please, don't cut the hair around the eyes. Brush out once a day and look her over for anything that may be on her, like briar's and such.

There are more good shampoo's on the market than I can list. Just make sure you get one that you can do frequent shampooing without stripping the coat. I buy #1All Systems. It's very concentrated and you mix with 7 parts water, so it goes a very, very long way and is ideal for frequent bathing. I use their conditioner as well. In the winter months, I use Vegetable glycerine, heated and give them hot oil treatments. Vegetable Glycerine is the only oil that actually penetrates skin and hair. It rinses out beautifully and never oily. After I rinse out, I use the conditioner.

Have the Vet. show you how to cut the nails. You will also need an ear drying solution for after the bath, and eye rinse. These babies are so close to the ground, they get lots of dust in those little eyes that can cause a lot of tearing and problems.

I could go on and on and on, but your eyes would be going around in circles. If I can help you any further, just ask. We all love to help new Yorkie owners, so your going to get great advice from the parents here. ;)
