Trifexis Ok folks, Bella has a vet appt. tomorrow late morning. I asked about the new flea/I thought tick/ and heartworm prevention all in one. What do you all think. Please don't get onto me, I've not had her heartworm tested since I've had her, I found out today. I usually give her comfortis for fleas. No topical parasite control, because I don't like the greaser look. But I've just done some research and I'm thinking about sticking with the topical preventives. Supposedly the Trifexis is made by the same company as Comfortis, which I like it. Just wondering what ya'll would do in this situtation. Really confused and I don't want anything pushed on me. Some of the side effects didn't sound to great, but anything that we give our babies can have side effects. I just want to do what's best for Bella. We do live in a rural area and we do have ticks. With the mild winter and warm spring, I'm afraid we're gonna be over ran with these nasty creatures that can cause our babies to be miserable. |

It is an all in one treatment . What i like about it is you can buy a low dose for 0 to 5 pounds.. Ask your vet about this one as well , it may be an option for you.. http://www.petdrugs.com/dogs/product...to+5+lbs/1265/ |
Best I can tell from my research... Trifexis and Sentinal (both chewable tablet) use the same active ingredient for heartworm, hookworm, roundworm, and whipworm (2.3mg milbemycin oxime). HOWEVER, Trifexis contains Spinosad for fleas and says it "kills fleas before they can lay eggs", while Sentinal uses lufenuron which "kills flea eggs and larvae before they become adults". And since it was mentioned... Revolution (topical) contains selamectin (a parasiticide) which "prevents heartworm, flea eggs from hatching... kills immature heartworm, adult fleas, ticks... treat and control roundworm, hookworm, ear mites, sarcopic mange". BTW lowest weight options are: Trifexis 5-10lbs, Sentinal 2-10lbs, Revolution up to 5lbs Hope this helps... with all the new products out there it is so difficult to make an informed decision. |
I prefer to use Advantix that goes on the skin for fleas and ticks because even though I know he body sucks it up I still feel better about giving her that then another poison to ingest. I give her interceptor for heartworms. I have never heard of a pill working for ticks. Also I would make sure to get her tested for heartworms once a year. |
When it comes to fleas, nothing has ever worked as well as comfortis. It's the best, and I don't have to worry about getting anything toxic rubbed off in bedding, furniture, or the kids. And we give another pill for heartworms, I'm pulling a blank on the name, but it's a chewable tablet and also protects against other worm parasites too, if I remember correctly. |
I used Sentinel for many years on 5 dogs with great results and no problems, so I was not happy about the shortage and having to use something else. Like you, I also did not want a topical. My vet recommended Trifexis. Since my dogs had never used spinosad, I wasn't too crazy about the switch but felt I had no choice. I just made sure that the day they got it I was going to be home all day with them and watch them very closely. That was 11 days ago and everything has been normal since then. I will continue to keep an eye on them for subsequent doses until I build up my confidence level. If you go to the Trifexis website, they have a rebate of $10 for six months or $20 for a year. |
I use comfortis for Kirby but I plan to switch her to Trifexis. She is a bichon so of course she weighs more than a yorkie. Comfortis works very good. We have some serious fleas in the south. |
I use Sentinel on my girl's and I just started them on Comfortis and I did not have any problems at all. Mine have horrible reactions to the topical as I stated several times before. I feel very comfortable with the discission I have made for them. |
I usually use Comfortis. I like it, works great. The research I read on the Trifexis, there's has been seizures in some pups that had never had that happen. I read other symptoms also that occurred. I guess it can happen with any of the oral products. When we first starting using Comfortis, we were told to eat a little bit, because there had been vomitting reported. Yes were are having a heartworm check. That has really been on my mind and heart heavy these past 24 hours. I think this year like I said is gonna be bad for any of that yuck for our pups. |
With comfortis and trifexis, you need to make sure your furbaby has a full stomach. Comfortis and trifexis will cause pets to have an upset stomach or vomit if given on an empty stomach. |

I don't give both the Sentinel and Comfortis on the same day. I give them a week apart and both always on a full tummy. |
Sentinel and Comfortis? Those fleas don't have a chance! Hope you stocked up on Sentinel. At our vet visit 2 weeks ago, the vet tech told me that she heard a rumor that the plant where Sentinel is made is not going to start up again ... emphasis on "rumor." |
Chase has been on Trifexis for awhile and has done great on it. Calvin has been on Sentinel, but I picked up Trifexes last week for him too since the Sentinel was gone. I like it better since it kills adult fleas too. |

The company is supposed to start making it again, but have no idea when. I don't know what I;m going to do if they don't, cause I won't use Heart Guard. I have two of my past girls get real sick on Heart guard so there fore I won;t use it any more. |
I just visited my vet today with Trixie and Wally and he had the Sentinel. I use that for the heartworm and I use frontline for them also. I buy the one for the most weight an I split it up among my guys acording to their weight as it is the same price for small dogs as it is for large ones. 1 vile is more than enough for all 4 of mine at once. I'm waiting on that because my Trixie has now started the steroid and the antibiotics today. I will do them in about 3 weeks or so. |
