AC Temperture Setting Hi everyone! This is my first post here. I have a questions for all of you. I would like to program my AC settings to change temps so I can save money on my electric bill. I like it set at 76 while we are home. Hubby and I are gone 8-5 Monday - Friday. What is the highest I can keep the temperture for my Yorkie to stay comfortable at home? Here are some details to help you, help me! My Yorkie is neutered Male 4 y/o and I keep his hair short, about 1-2 inch at most. I live in Central Florida and yes, it's about time to turn the AC (Sorry to those of you with the heat still on! I have marble flooring so it is cold even on hot days. He spends most of his day sleeping on my bed with a fan blowing on him, but he can go out the doggie door to our fenced in backyard. Would love anyone's advice to what the balance between saving money and keeping my furbaby comfy would be! |
Welcome to YT!! :D My Dh and I have the same hours as you and your DH and we are in So cali so we have about the same weather. I think 76 is fine, esp he has short hair and he stays in your bedroom with the fan on. I think it will be fine. |
We keep the ac at 77 when we are at home but 79 when we are not- which means it goes to 80 before the thermostat actually kicks in. We have tile thruout and I occassionally see Ziva lay on the floor for a few minutes - to cool off, but then she gets up onto the couch(leather)and moves on and off her couch bed. Abby (8 months) likes it warmer and we have yet to see her lay on the tile- Lucy, the wheaten, only lays on the floor- no blanket. The weather here has been so warm and sticky I finally gave in and turned on the ac on Saturday! |
Hi! So much depends on your exact circumstances. I also live in Central Florida, do not have marble floors, but have a heavy overhang of 100-yr-old Oak trees which keep my house very chilly until about 2-3 pm. I wear long sleeves in the mornings in July and Aug, and do not even need AC until later in the afternoon and/or evening, especially since the ceiling fans run pretty much 24x7 thru the summer-y months. Since one of the biggest discomforts with Florida heat is the 'liquid air' when the humidity is so high you just about drown if your gills don't kick in the instant you step outside, and even if they do, you feel like you are in the steamer basket of a pot on the stove, even higher temps (low 80's) will feel cooler with AC because the humidity is removed/lowered. I know lots of people who are very comfortable in their homes with the thermostat in the mid-80's, and their pets are comfortable as well. But you also have to take the dog into consideration, too. Some tolerate heat better than others or get colder more quickly/often and/or at higher temperatures than others. I would suggest that you play with the temps on the weekend when you are home with your pup and see what feels comfortable to him. Then, program your automatic thermostats accordingly. Good luck...take care! :) |
I will leave the a/c issue to everyone else....I am concerned about "THE DOGGIE DOOR"!!!! You do not allow your baby to go outside via the doggie door, to the back yard (even tho it is fenced) UNSUPERVISED, and with no one home, do you???? Please tell me you dont.....and if you do, please reconsider this practice! Toooooooo many dangers! Not to mention, someone will jump that 6 foot fence and steal that baby in a heartbeat! |

Air conditioner?! We still have the heat on! :p |
I thought about that doggie door too! I would love to have one but... We have had incidents with Ziva ("poison" toad and wasp bites) on a protected side yard with me standing 10 feet from her. I don't know what the outcome if we had not been there to flush her after the toad incident. Little Abby loves to go lay in the sun - I have had lots of people warn me about the large birds carrying off little dogs around here. |
Hi there and welcome... |
:welcome4: I agree with bumping the temp up a few degrees while y'all are away... the exact temp is relative (80 in Michigan really is different from 80 in South Louisiana for instance ;) ) I also wouldn't allow them use of a doggy door while no-one is home. While I don't always go outside with mine, I do watch them from our picture window with a full view of our fenced in back yard. I can't imagine allowing them access to outside with no adult supervision ;) |
