Did a stupid, stupid thing Kayla has Ct and gets excited over the least thing. I thought a couple of days ago that I would take her out in the front yard and just walk her around alittle bit and little by little she might do better. Taking her to the vet is a MAJOR thing. She is fine in the backyard for a few minutes and then the others will be playing and she will go to the back door wanting to go in. She started having one of her spells out in the front yard and I took her in and put her in front of the fan. She was so bad, I thought I was going to have to get her to the vet someway. It lasted about 3hrs. Never again. If she never goes anywhere or ever rides in the car again, I will not put her through that. That has to be so scary. If you remember, back in the summer her temp. hit 106 at the vets, she was so upset. I really thought we were going to lose her. How could I have been so dumb??? |
I know how scary that was for you because Gracie had difficulty breathing when she got too excited. The excitement of going to the vet with her was a nightmare too. Gracie was such an animated little girl who loved to play, and it was impossible to keep her from running full speed ahead in life. I did all that I could to protect her, but often it came down to managing her breathing attacks when they happened. Usually putting her in a sink of water submerged up to her belly turned things around for her very fast since getting her temperature down helped her breathing to return to normal. All we can do is our very best for our little ones, provide them with all our love, care, and excellent veterinary care, and to learn from our experiences. I don't have any doubt in my mind that you are an excellent mom and all of your babies are so lucky to have someone who loves them so much. |
You are a wonderful Mom. Please don't beat your self up over this. We are not all knowing, things happen. I know you would never do something you thought would hurt Kayla. I ask you to treat your self as kindly, as you treated me, when I made a mistake. Hugs Teresa |
It must be really frightening. A slightly cool tub of water will bring the body time down a bit faster without being drastic. Putting a cool wet towel on the head keeps the brain from getting overheated. Hope she is feeling better. |

CT is collasped treacha. The vet told me to put alcohol on her pads and that gets fever down pretty fast. THanks everyone but it worries me so much about her. She is just happy in the house, right with us. They told me to make her vet appt. when the weather is cooler also. I just wanted her to enjoy life and maybe she does in her own way. In mama and daddy's lap watching tv. lol I know Lisa you have gone through alot of the same things we have. I wish putting her in water would help like it did for your little Gracie but I really think Kayla would panic that much more. Its like she is not even listening to you or focusing when she has those spells. She breathes so hard and even at night she makes noises all the time. I need to get her weight down to about 5lbs at least, but its hard. She loves to eat, like Lexi. They are my little piggies. I have 2 thats over weight and 2 thats not. But boy, weight is important with this condition. Its not the answer but it sure helps. |
Kayla would probably get very excited at first if you put her in water, but once she realizes that it will help her, she will settle down very quickly. It took no more than one minute for Gracie's breathing to go from gasping for air to breathing normally. I allowed her to stand up and cling on me in the sink, so we both got "baths" and I massaged her to calm her down. It really helps so much. The trachea begins to swell when she is excited, so the temperature rises. Once you get the temperature down, Kayla's breathing will get much better. You can try spraying Kayla with a water bottle on her belly, head, and feet, but submerging her works much faster. In the summer, Gracie hopped in the pool when she got hot. Collapsing trachea is so scary to deal with. When I took Gracie with me, I always had ice blocks and towels to wrap her in. I'm sure you'll find a way to keep Kayla safe and protected while also making her feel like the happiest and luckiest little girl in the world. |
You were just trying to make her life more enjoyable.... we all do that and sometimes things don't turn out as we plan... Alcohol dries quicker.... with water you run the risk of their temperature plummeting so one needs to be careful when using water to cool a high temp. |

Not being able to breathe right is a very frightening thing. It is best to try and remain as calm as you can so that she does not feel your vibes. I have lived with four CT pups...all varying degrees and it can be very scary at times. Don't beat yourself ... you took her outside to enjoy the day. It just did not work...that can happen. At least you now know it probably is not good for her. Yes, you are right, she is happy in her world. She is not going to miss going out there...she has you and I am quite sure she is a happy, well loved pup. :) As for the car trips.....one of the things that always seems to help is to hold them up by the A/C vents. I also have done that with pups that were having a bad time in the house....just took them out and started up the car and A/C. Works really well somtimes! |
Don't beat yourself up! You were actually trying to find a way to help her, so possibly she could deal with it better. You now know that approach just won't work with her, she's okay, a lesson learned. It's in her best interest that you be good to yourself! :) |
Right now I am just going to concentrate on trying to get her weight back down to about 5lbs. I think that will help too. It would just kill us if anything happened to any of our babies but dh is really attached to this little girl. |

I know how you feel. Parker loves being outside, but he runs around barking at everything and then has trouble. It is worse when we have our windows open in the house, he gets excited about everything. We haven't had any luck getting his weight down either, and he acts like he is starving. |
Oh, I know. They look at you like, why are you starving me? Kayla loves food. To me, she is a cute size but the doc says no. Her mom and dad both weighed about 4 to 5lbs. She weighs about 8 or 9. Its like she can look at food and gain. They rarely have snacks unless its carrots, cheerios, or apples. I don't feed them but about 1/4 can of food mixed with kibble. I know it would help her so much to lose. Just going to have to try harder, with her and Lexi both. CT is horrible and we will do everything we can for her. We love her so much. |
Luckily for me, my boys do not have CT, I can't imagine what you go through daily with her, but my heart goes out to you! As for losing weight, my vet told me to feed them a 1/4 cup 2x a day. They seem to like that with some water drizzled on it. He also said if they are still starving feed them some green beans or carrots, but less carrots as they have more calories & sugar. I give them each 1 small treat a day when I leave for work and thats it. My Fletcher went from a really skinny 8.9lbs (hes a big boy) before his neuter, to a whooping 13.5lbs only 6 months after his neuter. Vet would like to see him at 11lbs if possible, maybe 10. Dexter was 7.5lbs at his last visit and he should only be 5.5lbs. So I am struggling with the weight loss thing too. Ive been diligent with feedings since mid-Jan and it does not seem like Fletcher has dropped an ounce. I would bet Dex dropped a 1/2 lb though. Its so hard to get them to lose weight! I thought it would fall off with the strictly controlled diet, but its not. |
My dogs with ct did well in water to calm them down, my one livedto go outside but usually would be so happy to see someone he would go into an attack. The summer was always worse, even if not hot in my house, I had oxygen at home it seemed to help for attacks. He could no longer go in car or out during the really hot day. I used these to keep them cool they really worked well might work for your do too as opposed to a bath. You can buy them online or at a sporting goods store. I know how devastating ct can be, I'm so sorry. We need to stop bad breeders and our loved pets wont suffer. If I knew then what I know now. Neck Coolers |
We run a humidifer for her and the vet said to try to come in when the weather is cooler and not take her out when its hot. I don't know if this is genetic or not. I feel so sorry for her when she has an attack. All we can do is just do the best for her and pray. |
