Puppy walks Hey, I just recently got a beautiful yorkie puppy named Eva :D and just needed some advice about walking her. I live in Canada and there's still quite a bit of snow and it shouldn't completely melt until April-ish. My question is should I get a head start on walking her outside even though she's still young or wait until spring comes along. Basically what age is it alright to throw the harness on her and show her off to the neighbourhood  lol.. |
hi congrats on your new puppy well in my experience yorkies are very sensitive to cold so if it were me i would wait on waliking outside till it warms up. if she is under 16 weeks you should wait till she has had her full series of vax including rabies before you take her out in public , for her protection |
She isn't protected until two weeks after her last series of shots, so I wouldn't take her before 16 weeks. If she's anything like Joey, she's not going to love walks at first. You might be better off to carry her around to the neighbors until it's warmer. I think it's easier to get them to love walks if you don't force it or scare them. We did a lot of walk/carry walks. He would plant his little bottom on the ground and not budge, it was so cute. Now, he can walk for miles, and he really loves it. Just be patient, once a dog is fearful of something, it's much harder to get them to ever enjoy it. |
You want to wait untill shes had all vaccinations. Then she will also be a good age to walk |
Okay gotcha! I don't want to force anything or do anything that's not in her best interest. I'm just so excited haha but I'll definitely wait! Thanks so much guys!! |

Wait until she is more protected from her shots and then you will have plenty of time to take her out safely. No use in taking undue chances with her health. |
I do not take Katie Scarlett out when it is really cold either. She just shakes and shivers at the slightest breeze and it breaks my heart to watch her shiver. When we first got her and she had not had her full round of shots, we practiced walking on the leash around the inside of the house. I wanted her to get used to walking with the leash. Then as soon as she was able, we started outdoor walks. On rainy days or days when it is too cold, sometimes I will take her to Petco, Petsmart, Lowes, Home Depot, etc...just anywhere that I can take her in with me and she can walk. Congrats on your new addition! :) |
Yes, it's a good idea to practice with the harness and leash inside so it's not a completely new concept when you do go out. First get her used to the harness and then attach the leash and let him pull it around behind him while you watch her. Once her shots are all complete you can take her for a ride in the car or some sort of outing. You want her to be social and not afraid of people and animals but be really careful of who and what you expose her to. When she is comfortable with going outside put a little coat on her and take her out for a walk! My eyes are always scanning the area for big dogs and kids because they tend to rush up to my little girl and scare the daylights out of me more than her. I figure you can't be too careful. All it takes is one incident to do some real damage. |
