leash training??? I have been working with jasper on walking on the leash. He is fine with it dragging behind him and he walks on it when I take him out to go potty and he is fine all the way to his spot and all the way back to the house (he gets excited to go back towards the house to smell and play with the cats) but if I try to walk him around the yard he would rather lay down then walk anywhere but potty spot or house. I have tried standing still and waiting for him to move forward but if he moves forward its more a different way (the way he wants to go not the way I wanna go). I know I don't wanna drag him but I don't know how to get him to go forward. I try calling him but he never comes when called ( I can call his name, make the kissy sound, or whistle but he never comes running towards me). I have tried treats but he doesn't ever seem to want the treat cus he isn't hungry. Please help. |
Put the leash on him inside of the house and get him used to walking in the inside of the house first |
I've never had this problem, but I think my first step would be to try and "walk" him in the house on the leash...even try tethering in the house. Get him used to the fact that he is supposed to follow you when you move. And of course if he is resistent, you need to find something that will help him move...get down low, call, clap, lay on the floor, use a treat, bring out a toy...anything that will attract him to you. |
Teddy did the same thing. We had to kind of push him along to give him the confidence for the walk. We did it by having one person get behind him and push his bum while the other person was in front with some meat (chicken breast) to entice him. We were very upbeat and made walking "fun" -- it really didn't take more than a couple of times before he was trotting along. He is a great leash walker but still a little intimidated by "the outside world" - some dogs are just different. |
We too practiced walking on leash inside the house. This really helped us. We also practiced around other dogs inside at puppy kindergarten. Now KS is a natural. If she gets distracted, I make a little soft tug on the leash and she knows that means to keep on walking with me. There are days when she can be a bit stubborn, but I am trying to walk her everyday and I think it is helping. Good luck! |
Practice in the house first, is good advice. We often teach Umbilical tethering. Please stop carrying your puppy. Jasper needs to learn to follow you. Hook a regular cloth leash to the pups harness never a collar and the other end to your wrist. Just do what you normally do, when you walk say the pups name with the cue word, Jasper, Let's Go; and go. Don't worry if you have to drag him a little at first, go slow and praise like crazy when he follows. It won't take him long to watch and follow you. A weekend of tethering will lay the foundation for teaching your puppy to heel. When you are sitting on the floor and your pup is tethered to you pretend to nibble a doggy treat or squeak a toy to get his attention. Cue with, Jasper Come and gently give the leash a tiny tug if he is not coming to check out the treat and or toy. This is a great way to begin teaching the cue COME. I think the book written by Sarah Hodgson Dog Perfect would be helpful to you. The whole idea is to teach, train and encourage, never to punish. Hope this helps. |
