When do yorkies reach "full grown"? Any one know on average? My little buddy is under three pounds and I was thinking of neutering him. He's 5 and a half months old. Also what are your personal experiences with your yorkie's growth? Thanks |
Growth rate depends on your dog's breeding lines. Some mature to full size early, others are late bloomers. Many Yorkies are full grown by 1 year of age and develop muscle mass in their second year, adding to their weight. My boys are full brothers and had growth spurts at 11 months of age. Teddy was really a late bloomer. He was just under 6 pounds at 8 months of age. He is a skinny 8 pounds 6 ounces full grown. :) |
Thanks. That's good to hear he will very likely be growing more. He's like 2.8 pounds right now and I wanted him to put on some more mass haha. Also I wasn't sure about when i want to get him neutered...maybe when he finishes growing due to what I've heard about bone density and hormones. |

Mine grew untill 1 1/2 but they have also put on weight as they have aged, they are 7 |
I would wait until hes about 7 months old to have him neutered!! I would imagine he still has some growing to do.... It will worry you no matter how old they are though!! I just recently had my 2.8 pound baby girl spayed...she did great!! As far as growth...they are all different! My oldest Bevo, was around 4 pounds and then suddenly hit a growth spurt when he was about 13 months old.. He now weighs 6 pounds at 3 1/2 yrs. Our little one, Bryleigh, hasnt hardly grown at all since she was about 4 months old. She will be 1 in June.... so she hopefully still may grow some! |
I would wait a bit... I agree with everyone else. My two grew until they were about a year and then filled out. |
I echo the wait and see advice, Sprocket was a full two yrs old when he came to us, OK a little old to be neutered, but still, wasn't done growing, a late bloomer, I liken it to a teenager becoming an adult. Yea they are an "adult" mostly but will get stronger and develop with a little more time. I asked my vet if the waiting had hurt Sprocket, she said no, cause his hormones probably made his bones stronger, I don't know about these things, but I have a jumper and it kind of eases my mind. So unless you have a real need, I'd wait. Just my 2 cents. Good luck either way. |
Make sure you have a full blood panel before you neuter; it’s recommended for all dogs, but especially tinies. Some pups are small due to genetic reason, and they are healthy as the larger pups, however, some are small due to things like liver shunt and you want to know this before you do any surgery. |
According to Dr Christine Zink, small toy breed dogs growth plates close anywhere from 12-14 months. Larger dogs may take longer. How-ever one doesn't need to guess, a simple lateral Xray view of the Tibia (which is a leg bone), it is easy to tell if this growth plate, which is the last to close, has Closed. I won't neuter a dog or spay a female until growth plate closure; and yes many studies show that the sex hormones play a great part in building bone density, and forming correct joint articulations; and that is only just one of the functions of the sex hormones. Now physical maturity is often different to mental/emotional maturity. Razzle probably put on about a 1/2 pound of muscle mass between 2 and 3 yrs old. He now looks like a mature adult, which he is. Mentally he is still a bit of a pup and was especially a pup at 2 yrs old. He finished his boney growth at I would guesstimate 18 months old, but still looked leggy and skinny. His leg muscles really developed that second summer of swimming. His back muscles haunch, and shoulder muscles rounded out nicely at about 2.5 yrs old. |
i just had cedric neutered at almost 11 months just a lil over 4 pounds....late i know but i was super paranoid!! all we very well though and hes so much better now...no marking and he doesnt hump everything anymore. hehe. |
Yes we waited until Bailey was around 10 months old and he did great. He'll be a year (we think) the 21st of this month. He is hovering just under 8 pounds these days. |
Thanks (as always) for all your advice gang, helps lots. And Gemy, I remember you posting something about getting an X Ray. I think I will do that before just to be sure |
I enjoyed this discussion because i have been wondering when to have my Yorkiepoo neutered. She is so small that he vet has reccommended that she not be allowed to have pups. |
