Looking for a yorkie
 

I've been looking EVERYWHERE for a male yorkie for my mom for her birthday. I'd like to adopt one but it's suppose to be a surprise so home visits are going to be hard since my mom is ALWAYS home. does anyone know of a place in new jersey that I can adopt one from or buy one from. I really don't have 500-1000 dollars to pay so a good cheap adoption center would be perfect!!

I wouldn't buy someone a puppy as a surprise gift. Dogs are a responsibility that shouldn't be taken lightly. I would want them involved in the purchase/adoption. Your Mom will be the one taking care of the puppy so she should have a say so in the pick of the puppy/dog. How do you know your Mom wants a puppy?

I know for a fact she wants one because 1- I live with her. & 2- shes constantly talking about getting a yorkie. I have my own dog & it's no problem taking in another one. I just want to surprise her with one for he birthday, I know she'll take care of it & I'd also help her because it would be my dog also.

Have you gone on petfinder.com to see if any shelters might have a Yorkie?

I agree. But you could get your mom a dog crate or a bunch of dog stuff and a note that says a real dog is included in the gift. Or an "I love my yorkie" magnet, bumper sticker, etc. You are an awesome daughter. What a great present.

;)good advice....a gift of puppy/dog equipment would be a great surprise...then go get a yorkie together....

rescues are a great idea...

:thumbup: My Brody was a surprise gift from an adult sibling to another adult sibling...who already had a 95 lb. 1-yr-old dog. Had anyone asked anyone seriously beforehand, I would not have Brody today...I shouldn't comment further 'cuz I am thrilled to have him! :D

Giving a puppy as a gift is not the best idea also getting a "cheap" yorkie is not a good idea either because to save costs the breeder might not be testing the parents, AKC registering them, not getting them the vet care they might need and cutting other corners.

If it was for a girlfriend or a child I would agree that it would not be a good idea but this daughter is wanting to get one for her adult mom that has been wanting a Yorkie. I don't see that as irresponsible.

Your mom might like to pick out her own puppy though. Or she may want to decide for herself if she wants to take on a shelter or rescue dog vs a puppy. Both are things that require some insight and consideration.
It may be fun to hand her a cute little puppy but if that puppy comes from a background that could have health or personality issues the whole thing could backfire.

Giorgio was a surprise gift, I didnt have anything for him, but the hubby went right out to Walmart to get some stuff to use overnight since he got home with the dog at 9:00, he traveled three hours to get my baby. I had been talking about getting a Yorkie or another kind of toy breed dog for a long time.

My father loved Beagles. I found an excellent breeder, who was highly recommended, who had several beautiful litters of adorable babies, different ages....only problem was they were about twice what I had saved up to buy him a puppy with. So, I gave him a birthday card with a picture of a rabbit in it...wrote a note that said "I was going to get you a rabbit, but I didnt think mom would approve of a hutch in the den....so I have selected another gift for you, all researched and highly recommended"...then on the back, I put 4 pictures of the 4 litters the breeder had. My father had a fit over the babies, I told him they were more expensive than I could afford, but I wanted to give him all I had saved toward the puppy.....he loved the gift, he said the research and foot work I had done to assure he had a healthy baby was worth at least a thousand dollars (my sweet daddy would say something like that!), we drove to get the baby he selected himself from the litters, and he paid for the puppy, and let me pay for the bed and toys, etc....and we brought Sparky home. Daddy treasured Sparky until dad died 6 years later from lung cancer. Sorry I rambled on and on.....memories. Point being, maybe you could do something like this for your mom.

Maybe you could find someone who shows Yorkies and ask if they have a retired male. They make wonderful companions because of all the training they get.

I kind of agree with this. It's a big decision that can last 15-20 years so I think she should probably choose it. It's considerate of you to think of that. Maybe go the route of purchasing the books, supplies, etc first?

Also I recommend an older dog or one from petfinder as they will be a lot easier on her than a puppy
