Yorkie in Heat I have a female yorkie that is in heat. I have never had a dog in heat before. Can ayone tell me what to expect. She is only 6 months old. My male is driving her and myself crazy..... Thanks |
Welcome to YorkieTalk . You will have to separate them , she is way much too young to have puppies . Do you have pictures . |
Your female is way too young to take chances of a mishap with. You MUST keep them apart or you can end up with some problems. You will have time to educate yourself about breeding and make up your mind if it is for you.. Is there some place you can place one of them to be sure they do not get together?? Maybe a friend or someone?? |
She is definately way to young to breed, shes still just a baby herself. I'd keep them apart. Maybe a room where one can stay and you can take turns several times a day letting each one out with the family? This would probably be less stressful to them than taking one of them away from home completely. |
If a responsible adult can be home to constantly watch them, then I would agree that they can stay home and just be separated. BUT, be prepared for a lot of howling, crying and digging..the dogs will do those things too...LOL Seriously. it takes only SECONDS for that accidental tie and subsequent pregnancy to happen...Would it be possible to take your male to your vet for his neutering now? That would be a permanent solution to the problem... |
With us when Zaylee came into heat we kept a diaper on her and a belly band on him. They of course went outside to potty by themselves. It went very well, but Gizmo did drive us insane for about a month!!!! |
You MUST keep them seperated. She is WAY too young to be bred!!!!! Belly bands and diapers aren't good enough, they will find a way around it. They must be watched at all times. After we brought Gracie back from being bred, I still had to keep her seperated from my males. Either the males or her were crated at all times. They did not go outside by themselves. Hectic and a pain in the butt? Yeah...but precautions must be taken. |
How do you tell when their comimg into their heat. Cali is 22 weeks and just the last 2 days has been licking herself down there alot and much more sleepy. When she's up she's fine but she also is trying to snuggle up with my pom alot. Is she too young? What were the signs that your 6 month old was going into heat? |
You do have to keep them seperated. Trying to watch them carefully will not be good enough and will drive you all crazy. Expect this to last for about 3 weeks. You would be amazed at the circumstances in which dogs will find a way to breed. It is only natural. However, your puppy is way too young. |

Thanks I may have my vet check her out. I didn't want to spay her until she was a little bigger, she is 3 lbs. |
Even more important not to let her breed at such a small size and young age. I thought it would be too mean to seperate my two, and a friend told me that Bronx, my boy, was too young (1 year). The thing was though, when Zowie was about 1 month pregnant (a month later), the two started fighting and had to be kept completely seperated for about the next three months. We used a cage to sort of divide up the house, and one person usually had to stay with each one when we were home to keep them happy. Believe me, the three weeks would have been much easier. Why not neuter the male instead? |
