Fleas Hi, do any of you use the garlic tablets for dogs to help with fleas? If anyone has ever had experience good or bad with the garlic tablets, please let me know. I have read many different views on the use of it; pro and con. Thanks! |
Garlic isnt good for dogs- You should get your dog on a Flea Preventive... K9 Adantix, Frontline... Something like that- I have Pnut on K9 Advantix and I love it- He has been on it since he was a pup and I have never seen a flea or tick on him! |
If you are looking for a truly natural flea remedy do some research on food grade Diatomaceous Earth. Many people use it as a dusting on their pets and in their homes as well as outside the home. It's not as simple as a once a month treatment but it is all natural. |

I have Addy on comfortis now and have had her on K9 Advantix before and it stop working. I don't know what the deal is with the fleas the last couple of years; nothing seems to work anymore. Before that I had zero problems with the fleas. Addy has severe flea allergies. :( Thanks for responding. |

I throw in 10 or 12 cloves of garlic when I cook up their rice & pearled barley together, (4 cups of vegetable, chicken or beef broth, 1 cup rice & 1 cup of pearled barley) but I discard the cloves after cooking. WOW!! Thanks for the link; a lot of useful info. |
Another thing you may consider is that Advantage and Advantix will not work if you apply it up to 3 days after a bath. You can use it and then give your dog a bath a few days later but do not apply after a bath for at least 3 days. If your house has some fleas in it the Advantix and Advantage will not last as long either and may need to be applied more often until the fleas are under control. Sometimes the fleas will develop a resistance to certain products and you may need to change to a different product to get results. |

I have used diatomaceous earth, and it is very natural. However, it is only a short term solution, I noticed I had to put it on every day or every other day in order to keep the fleas away. If I skipped a day or two, I would notice fleas again. It also gave their fur a weird texture, but it works if you are willing to keep up with it! |

Thanks, I think there is a resistance problem with the advantix and advantage products, due to the fact that I have used them for years. This is the second year I have used comfortis, so I wouldn't think there has been enough time for resistance to it. ?? |

Sentinel and capstar or frontline or advantage when you do see fleas... I wouldn't give garlic. |

It takes 30 days for most things to break the egg, larva, flea cycle. I live in Fl. and loved Comfortis the product really worked well. My Vet has changed my Yorkies to Trifexis. This is a combo med for most intestinal worms, fleas, and heart worms. |
Jilleen, I live in Arab, AL and I had to put mine on comfortis. Its the only one that would work up here. I tried the topical like frontline and advantix and neither of those worked with the fleas. Comfortis had the fleas killed within 30 minutes and works for a month. During the summer, I give them one every month and the winter about every 2 months. I also treat my back yard inside my fence to help with the fleas too. Hope this helps! |
I have always used advantage and never had a flea problem. I tried to switch to Front line one year and they got fleas so I am sticking to advantage |
I wouldn't use garlic either...especially fresh....there is a thread on here with foods that are bad for pets...I used to use brewers yeast for my golden retriever. Have only had a couple on each one since we got them...MO...I wouldn't use chemicals on my dogs...I (have posted this many times...sorry for the repeat). 1 Cup of water 1- 20 drops peppermint oil put in spray bottle...shake, wet a paper towel and rub it all over them....starting under neck and work your way down...it does NOT make them greasy they smell good and makes their hair soft. This came from a holistic vet in our area...because it is all natural you have to do this every couple of days...we use this and haven't had a flea or tick since... May be a little more work but worth it! I think |
I don't like to use frontline or like products on my pets. There has been too many horror stories from them for me to feel safe. I haven't had much luck with DE on fleas (Love it for worming though). I have used cedar oil for the last two years and have had really good luck with it. Dr.Bens Paws & Claws | Natures Defender |

I have tried various natural remedies but have not been able to keep up with the bugs. I live out in a wooded area that also has tall grasses. If it were not for the cats I think the natural might have a chance but with them going outside and picking up these critters it is just too much to keep up with. I thought one year that the Advantage had quit working but found that I was applying it too soon after a bath. Once I started applying it correctly again (at least 3 days after a bath) it started working as it was supposed to. I usually only treat them 4 months out of the year but with the warmer weather this year I had go to 6 months out of 12. It seems like every year the onslaught gets worse. |

I saw Trifexis at my vets this past weekend and ask about it. I thought they didn't recommend giving the flea and heartworm treatment at the same time.....but that was a couple of years ago, so I have a1ways separated them. But, the vet said it was safe and recommend it. I have just purchased a 6 pack of comfortis a couple of weeks before and have some heartguard on hand....when I run out of them I will see if I want to change to Trifexis. But, most of the time I like for the product to be out awhile before I try it. You will have to let us all know how it works for you. |

Hi all... It has been a very long time since I have posted! Life has been very busy since I have gone back to school to finish my degree; however, I wanted to chime in on this thread. I use the brewers yeast with garlic tablets along with pennyroyal and it does an amazing job at keeping my pups flea free. |
