Bath question I was wondering how I should wash Joels head. I have a fear of getting water anywhere on his face or in his ears, and haven't washed his head realy, lol. Is it ok to poor water all the way over his head, and im worried about getting soap in his face also. The shampoo and conditioner are from the vets for his dry skin. So any tips would be helpful. :D |
Hi, to wash his head and face just wet the washcloth and do his face and head. You are right not to pour water over his head. You do not want to get water in his ears or soap in his eyes, it could cause problems. Just put a tiny dab of puppy shampoo on the washcloth and rinse it out then use it to wash his head and face . That is what i do.. |

Maggie lets me suds the top of her head, just right on top, between her ears, and under her chin. I put her in the sink and use the hand sprayer. I make sure to control the pressure so it only goes where I direct it. I do it like I did my kids and use the side of my hand to make a dam so it doesn't go down into her eyes. She has floppy ears, so that probably helps keep it out of her ears, can you bend the ears down with your hand while you wash? She sort of naturally tilts her face up so the water runs down the back of her neck. I do under her chin the same way. I use a washcloth for the rest of her face (nose to forehead). I don't use much shampoo on the head area and I give her a break by not using the conditioner there either. Never any health/injury problems with bathtime. I do not like when she decides to give a soaking wet shake though! |
i put cotton balls in his ears and only use a bit of water to get him wet up there and then suds a lil and my husband helps to hold his head back for a sec. that has been successful for me so far. |
I wash both pups at once...each in its own half of my divided kitchen sink. I mix a gentle 'tearless' shampoo solution in a squeeze bottle but only put the shampoo solution, and conditioner, on their heads from the ears back and under their chins...no shampoo in any 'lick' position or around their eyes or on top of their muzzles. I rinse with the kitchen sprayer...which I can make 'harder' or 'softer' by adjusting the water flow at the faucet, tipping their heads back and covering ears and making a barrier with my hand so ears and eyes forward do not get water run-off at all, then 'squeezee' the water down the backs of their heads. Between the eyes and on top of their muzzles I use my hands and warm water only. I do their eye area and muzzles last after all else is rinsed off of them. I also take a small fine tooth comb, angled away from their eyes at the muzzle and comb the eye-boogies downward and out of their tear area. I do this part daily to minimize/eliminate staining. It sounds complicated, perhaps, but is really quite fast and easy. I, of course, kissy all over their little faces during their snuggle-washes! :D |

My girl HATES the hair dryer. She will squirm away from me like her life is at stake. I towel her off really good and then she runs crazy through the house wiping her face all over the carpets. It is the funniest thing! |
Thanks everyone, so I'll try the washclothe. Joel also runs like crazy all over my bed after his bath, lol. |

lol I know the squirm! You'd think I torture mine on an hourly basis if you saw them squirming like that! lol I think so, too...that you do pretty much what I do. I saw your post after typing mine up. You described it as making a 'dam'...which is what I do. I use the hand to hold down their floppy ears against their head and firmly on top of their heads. I also spray a bit of water under their eyes on the lower part of their muzzles, holding them still for the .002 seconds it takes to do it. :p Mine do the 'plowing' thing, too...so hilarious to watch...they just go mental...lol, but we don't have carpet so they plow on the sofas or the bed. Brody rubbed an eye once plowing after a bath and ended up trembling a few hours later with an eye crusted shut. I put opthalmic (is that the word) ointment right away and he was fine the next day. Mine will lick anything on their faces during a bath, which grosses me out...so I don't give them anything but water that they can lick...and I worry about them shaking the soap into each other's eyes, etc. I do not know if they like the taste of the soap or not...hope not...I just don't want them to eat it. I clean floors, cabinetry, etc. with water, and/or vinegar, and/or steam combinations instead of household cleaners if at all possible because I have never liked the idea of a pet walking on that ick then licking it off their paws. I don't even let mine walk across parking lots or streets...not even on store floors...bad enough they walk on sidewalks. I never put their top knots up until after they are all plowed out. Mine don't mind the dryer too much though...Mia likes it less than Brody...but I got them an Andis QuietAire 1875 with the base and it is quieter than my 1875 watt hair dryer that I was using on my hair and used to use on Brody before getting the Andis. Since I do both kids at once...cuts my time doing baths in half :p, after wrapping them up in towels, then letting them shake off...they get pretty dry that way, I pull the dryer out of the base and keep it swinging while they plow on a thick soft towel on the counter, and shower me with the shake, rattle and roll. I keep my hand between them and the heated air so I know what they are feeling on them, and reduce the heat/air as they dry. Faces are always last with the lowest setting. Mia doesn't much like the face being done, although I never blow it in their faces anyway...just on top and under their chins. Brody will come and sit pretty for me with his head up so I can make him handsome! :D I put it in the base and point it at their feet at the end while I brush them out...the feet are the last to dry, and I leave them just slightly not completely dry dry for brushing. They look 'matte' until after they are completely dry, then they get so soft and shiny! :D |
I grab a cup, cup my hands over his eyes like on top where his bangs would be and pour down- then I take my faucet nozzle and put it next to his face, get the side of his beard wet and under his chin... Pretty easy I rinse the same way :D |
I wonder if the people who do use sprayers etc to wash the heads are parents who have learned through doing their infants and small children and if the ones who only use washcloths on the had have NOT had infants to bathe. It is very similar technique. |
I bathe Gracie in my kitchen sink. I put her head back and carefully pour water on her head making sure the water does not go in her eyes or her ears. I use a cut to get the sides of her nose wet and then lather her up and rinse with the cup. A washcloth helps for getting close to the eyes. Be real careful not to get water in the ears and take some cotton swabs to help dry off the inside of the ear after the bath. There is a thing made by a company called a Rinse Ace that is an attachment to your sink faucet with a three way sprayer for bathing your dog. It really makes things a lot quicker and easier. |

I too either use a washcloth or a damp sponge. I am terrified of getting water in KS's ears or eyes. And she hates water on her face! |
