I Don't Understand....
 
Before Jazzie got spayed on the 17th, she was completely puppy pad trained, but now she's reverted back to not using them. I scrubbed carpets yesterday, made sure to use the stuff to get all the smell completely out, and I woke up this AM to poo and pee on my bedroom carpet and then when my hubby took her to the living room, she messed out there on the carpet to :-( I'm sick and don't feel like scrubbin the carpet again today, but looks like I have to drag the scrubber back out anyhow. I hate to have to do it, but now she won't be able to sleep out of her kennel again until she learns to use the puppy pads again :-( Why do they revert back to not using the puppy pads after they are spayed?

They can have spay incontinence for a short period after a spay. They can also get UTIs after a spay so if it keeps up it needs a vet check

I think the anesthesia messes them up temporarily, this happens to many, and one must start over from the beginning with their potty training. I'm not sure if they learn quicker the 2nd time around or not. May depend on the dog.

Other events can to cause this to happen... moving to a new home, coming home from a vacation, a stay in the hospital. Just start from square 1 and retrain.

I've heard a few stories about after effects of spaying, ears dropping, one woman said her little guy became a real bitchy mean dog after.
I actually am grateful I had to ill effects.
By the way what is a UTI?

You poor thing.. It so happened to miss Brandy to.. The vet said it's the medication that messes with them and they just forget.. It took Brandy almost three weeks now to know that she is not allowed to use the bathroom in the living room. When she got spay she use to hide behind the couch and go their. Then we started crate training 101 all over and she had been doing better. The only thing is we still don't give her free range of the living room because we want to wait a little more..good luck I hope everything works out. It takes time try crate training for now..:aimeeyork

I am so dreading this, Prissy is being spayed next week and doing so well with her training...

Ok, at what age did you have your girls spayed? I have read all of the info and thinking that I want hers done before her first heat..

Same thing happened to Coco Chanel. I think it was more incontinence than anything else and she made her way back to the pad when she was better, which was within a few days.

We had this problem too! Katie Scarlett was going all over the house after her spay. We just stayed patient with her and started back from step 1 with our potty training. It took her about a month, but now she is doing great. She rarely has an accident. She is pad trained as well.

OK, I'm the one that always encourages everyone to spay before the first heat but Gracie was not spayed until she was a year old because of her small size. We had zero problems with the potty issues. I don't know if age has a thing to do with it but I guess the longer they do a thing the more engrained it would be in their brain.

I have read that the operation it's self can sometimes effect the bladder because they are in that area during the surgery and can accidentally damage the area. I guess that is something you can look up and read up on. Someone already mentioned it as spay incontinence. On rare occasions it can be a long term problem. I doubt very much that would be what you are dealing with. It's probably just a matter of retraining.

Mags was between 6 and 7 months old when she was spayed, we waited thing long cause she was really sick when she came to us, but after she was spayed, we never had this issue with her ever. Jazzie is 1 year and 8 months old now, I've had her for going on 3 months now. My boxer girl Gracie was spayed about 2 months ago and she never had this issue either. It's always best to have them spayed before their first heat, it cuts their chances of a lot of medical issues that can arise such as cancer, mammary tumors to name a few.

Ya, that's what I'm doing, startin back at square one with my ll munchkin butt. It's so hard though, cause she's really found her place in our family and she LOVES being with the hubby, Mags and I in bed at night.... But, she's gotta learn. I know she's gonna be cryin tonight :-(

AWESOME!! Hoping we get the same results with Jazzie. She really is such a good girl, and I feel so bad for her when she goes anywhere else though, the people that had her before us wasn't good to her at all, and they must have terrorized her when she had accidents. When she goes off the puppy pad and I got towards her to clean it up, she cowers and rolls over and puts her paws in the air and shakes, it just breaks my heart:( We tell her all the time it's ok, she's not in trouble, accidents happen, we'll just reteach her. She's still not back to eating right, I mean, she does eat, but not as much as she did and it's a tad runny. She kept gettin poo on her fur so I trimmed it up where it wouldn't get all over her, she was soooo humiliated when that would happen, but such a champ about holding really still and letting me clean her up. I couldn't ask for a better lil girl, she's just the sweetest thing, accidents and all.

Ya, that's what I'm thinkin, about retraining her I mean. She wasn't trained when we got her, but it only took about a week and she had no more accidents. Startin back to square one will do the trick I hope. She LOVES being in the livingroom and the bedroom with me, so what I did was used that as a tool to train her when she first came to us. Soon as I'd let her out of her kennel, I'd carry her to the kitchen where I had a puppy pad down and as soon as she would go poo and pee on it, then I'd take the gate down and let her have access to the living room or we'd go back in my room, she caught on fast, so, that's what we're doing now, hope it still works.
