Marking on new wool carpet? Our 1 year old yorkie Sprite has started doing her business in the house on the new wool carpet I have in the living room. She's house trained and doesn't pee or poop on any of the other man-made fiber area rugs in the house or on the hardwood floors but she just seems to think this rug is her toilet....gross. I've used Nature's Miracle, vinegar, steam cleaned it 3 times now, but nothing seems to help. I'm going to steam clean it one last time and then put it away in defeat since I'm clearly not winning this battle :( Since this carpet is 100% wool, do you think the scent is causing her to mark? Any advice would be appreciated. I have 2 other dogs that don't do this, so I'm confused. |
I would look to a specialty cleaner and try that out. Otherwise, unless you want to have her tethered to you, to immediately catch any infractions; maybe put carpet away after cleaning, for another year or two., My other thought is, she might be marking her territory versus actual urinating. |
I wonder about wool too, I think the smell of it can encourage marking or peeing. Regular steam cleaning will not eliminate the urine smell to the dog, you have to use an enzyme cleaner, so all animal protein is removed. Sometimes, it takes more than one treatment and you can check with an black light to see if it’s all gone. I had to put all throw rugs away for a few years, but when Joey was around 4, I was able to bring out a throw rug, so maybe you could put it away for a few years, or make that room off limits. |
I would guess it is the wool. She may smell the animal like scent on it. You know how they can smell things much better than a human. I guess you could try cleaning the whole carpet and see how it goes. I once got a quilt that was very ornate and made in India. When I opened the box Gracie started to growl at it right away. She started acting crazy and wanting to dig at it. It must have had some animal scent on it. I had to wash it twice before she would leave it alone. I have never seen her act like that about anything else. |
The cleaner I've been using is Bissell "Pet Stain & Odor" which is compatible with our Bissell steam cleaner. Is there a better cleaner someone can recommend instead? Also she is both peeing and pooping on the carpet. I take her outside to do her business and know that she's peed and pooped outside, but she's being very sneaky about this. She doesn't do it anywhere else in the house, and this only started a couple of months ago when I bought this new carpet . I am putting the carpet away now, but I'm curious as to why she would start this in the first place. |
I don't think there's anything wrong with the products you’re using, I love Nature's Miracle, and used that on every spot as soon as possible. I also use Bissell "Pet Stain & Odor" and I'm very happy with that on the regular polyester carpet. I have a sheep skin rug that I've never been able to keep Joey away from, I just think it's something about the smell, and he wants sheep skin pee pads! By the way do you use pee pads, and do you have a pad in that room? I really think she thinks that's a pee pad. |
No, I don't use pee pads and never have. I have 2 other dogs and all the dogs have been trained to do their business outside. We have other area carpets in the house, one located very close to this one, but Sprite has never marked or had any kind of accident on that carpet. It's made of synthetic fibers, not natural wool. I didn't realize at first that she was peeing on the new carpet since the stains didn't show. I caught her in the act one day about a week after I got the carpet, and then realized that there were little pee stains all over :(. They were very hard to see since they're almost the exact colour of the carpet. I steam cleaned the whole carpet (10 x 12 ft) but it's been a losing battle ever since and now she's pooping on it too. I guess I better stick to synthetic carpets from now! |

When I got a new sofa, Yoshi would mark it and it took a while to break him from it, I'm sure it was the scent of the fabric protection or something in the fibers. I also bought a new leather sofa and chair and he doesn't bother them at all. So it maybe what your dog is doing has something to do with the smell of the wool. I hope he quits this soon, it has to be frustrating. |
Nancy, I've never used a black light but that sounds like a good idea. I'm about to steam clean right now, so I'll check with the light before I put the carpet away to make sure everything's gone. Thanks so much everyone for your suggestions and ideas about what's causing this. |
I have a little Bissell steam cleaner that I use for small areas and it works well but when I want clean carpeting I rent the heavy duty carpet cleaner at a carpet store a few miles from here. Maybe you could find one of the professional steam carpet cleaning machines to really get all the scent out of it. |
My husband picked up a blacklight this evening and we checked the carpet all over. Let's just say that Sprite was a busy little girl. Even after I steam cleaned the carpet the black light still showed up all the stains. I then used Nature's Miracle on every stain just to be sure but they still showed up under the black light. Apparently the stains will show permanently but will not look as bright green as they did before. We then went through the house and surprise surprise, we found another little area that Sprite was using in the hallway upstairs that we didn't have a clue about. I was shocked because we never caught her doing anything there and didn't see anything with the naked eye. I've been steam cleaning all evening and little Sprite doesn't know it yet but she's going back to square one with the house training. She's going to be on her leash again inside until she can be trusted :( The suggestion to use a black light was great. Thanks so much!!! |
I have always read that steam cleaners are the wrong thing to use for stains and odors. Read this article: Removing Pet Stains and Odors : The Humane Society of the United States Avoid using steam cleaners to clean urine odors from carpet or upholstery. The heat will permanently set the stain and the odor by bonding the protein into any man-made fibers. |

Ahh!!! This is the third time I\'ve gone to hit send and my post has disappeared. Do you get timed out here after a few minutes? Anyways, I read the article and there was some great info. I did try to get every spot I knew about with an enzyme cleaner before steam cleaning, but because I didn\'t have the black light I must have missed some old pee stains that are now permanently set. I checked the Nature\'s Miracle q&a site and they say that the stains will still show under black light after treatment but the intensity will be less. So I guess once the damage is done, a stain is left one way or the other. We have wall-to-wall carpet upstairs so it does need to get steam cleaned once in a while anyways just from human traffic. My lesson learned is to put hardwood down everywhere haha. Thanks again everyone for your advice. I really appreciate it. |
