Our Dexter is eating the paint off the doors Yes, he is chewing away at a few different doors. Tried spraying the bitter spray stuff from Petco. Does not seem to work. Some of this old paint may have lead? What should we do? Repaint I have not really caught him to say no. He does this if we leave him alone which is rare. |
I would confine him away from the doors when you can't supervise him closely. Lead paint can be very dangerous for him. How old is he? Hopefully this is a phase, a brief phase. |

Kayla and Dudley both did that. Kayla, the wall. Dudley the dresser. It seemed though, that stopped about as fast as it started. Maybe chewies would help. Alot of people like the bully sticks. I can't stand the smell of them, but try something like that and good luck. |
It's most likely a sign of boredom. Lexie did the same thing when she was a pup, we had 2 patches on the wall that we had to patch up and paint over she had peeled some of the drywall off too. She had lots of chew toys and ignored them all. We taped some paper over the patches for a while and she stopped. You could leave him with some chews but i never give mine consumable chews unsupervised. He'll probably grow out of it but for now i would confine him. |
I would crate him or limit his area with an xpen when you have to leave him unsupervised. |
If he is bored or upset because he is alone maybe a good chew toy would distract him from the door. We give Gracie bully sticks. If he only does it when you are gone I'd guess it is boredom. He needs something to do. Paint can't be good for him. |

Bailey chewed the corner of one of the archways, a dining room chair, & Natalie's desk. We tried the sprays but unless you plan on spraying forever, I doubt it will work. Some suggest tobasco sauce or the like. You'd probably have to spray or use the tobasco just prior to them doing it. We went to a local store here and they guy recommended an antler. It kinda freaked me out at first, but I can tell you this: Bailey hasn't chewed anything but the antler. I like them because they are all natural with no additives. The deer and elk shed them every season so no harm is being done to the animal. There's no chemicals or colors so no staining and they're filled with minerals. They don't splinter and Bailey loves them! Plus, my house doesn't look like it's been infested with termites anymore. |
I get Gracie the 12" bully sticks. They can't bite off pieces of a bully stick and that is part of what makes them so much better than rawhide. I do throw them away when they get to be 3 or 4". It takes her two weeks to get it chewed down to that point but she only chews occasionally. Maybe try it and leave him for just a short time and come back and check on him to see how he is doing. |
