Irritation at microchip spot Three weeks ago I got Heidi a microchip. She seemed to take it well, but she keeps scratching at the place where they implanted it. The top of her shoulder is broke out in red bumps. You can still see the needle spot, but it doesn't look irritated itself. I don't know what to think. It started looking better, but now she has the surface scratched up again. What could be going on? Can't be allergic to it can she? |
Did the vet put it in? If so, you should call the vet right away, and please let us know what he says. There are some dogs who have a reaction if even saline water is injected, but this is something your vet should know about. What kind of chip are you using? |
Yes, the vet did it. Its HomeAgain. I'll give him a call. Thanks. |

Went home at lunch to see how it looks this afternoon. It looked much better than this morning for some reason. All the spots were pretty much gone, the skin was just a bit pink and she was leaving it alone. I noticed her nails seem kind of sharp because I trim them often and didn't file them, so I put a t-shirt dress on her so she can't scratch it and will smooth them up tonight. I don't know, maybe she kept irritating it. If it flares up again I'll definitely take her in so the vet can have a look. Thanks. |

Yeah, that's true. I'll definitely have it checked it. Thanks! |
It could be a number of things. You sure should call the vet's office and let them know. They need to know about any form of reaction so they can be aware of things that can possibly happen to other pets. It could be that it caused some irritation to the tissue around the area and she is scratching because it bothers her. The vet may be able to give her something until the area heals properly. I could feel Gracie's chip for a few months after it was placed but it didn't seem to bother her. Now I can't find it when i try to find it. |
It still looks better, but she kept wanting to scratch at it so I took her to the vet after work. They said it isn't infected but is pretty inflammed. The vet could feel the chip & it scanned correctly. They gave me a low dose of antibiotic & a steroid for her and said hopefully it'll be cleared up in a few days & bring her back if its still a problem. Thinks she probably scratched it at first & just keeps aggravating it. Thanks for the concern. She's just the sweetest girl. They were as bad as me at constantly loving on her. :) |
So glad you took her. Hope it clears up real soon. |
I do not really have any advice, but I did want to say I hope Heidi gets better. Our vet used the Home Again chip too when KS went in for her spay surgery, but she did not even notice it. |
