Scientific article about Yorkie word learning
 
Dear All,
A scientific article was published yesterday about vocabulary learning in a Yorkie. The journal is called PLoS ONE (Public Library of Science), one of the most respected online scientific journals. Adie know a lot of words and we frequently spell to keep her from knowing what we are talking about. She did figure out a few spelled out words.

One word she just doesn't seem to understand is "no". She seems to think it means go over there and sit down then come back in two minutes and ask again.:p

Welcome! I just read the article (skimmed over part of it) and watched the videos - pretty amazing pups these yorkies are! I know our Jack recognizes certain of his toy also. They never cease to amaze me with the smarts and cuteness!

I think sometimes Yorkies are sold short. They are so smart and have so much potential to do much more than what people teach them. Perhaps that is why some people say their dog has behavioral issues. The dog is so smart it needs to be challenged with more training.

I totally agree with you. And the more we stretch their potential and intelligence the better. When I'm 'talking' to Harry, he sits there and tries so hard to take it all in and understand. You can just see it in their intelligent, beautiful, inquisitive eyes :) Sally + Harry x

Definitely! I get teased by a friend because I claim Kaji understands, but he does understand!! He knows various key words in 2 languages, how is that not amazing?? I was working on him recognizing each toy by name, but gave up when work got in the way. I'm going to make an effort to do this with him 15 minutes everyday. We'll see where that takes us. :)

I've been doing that, too!! :) Harry knows the word 'ball' (of course! ;)) - but it only took a few minutes for him to realise the difference between 'ball' and 'squeaky ball' (with me doing a few mouse-y impersonations...not a pretty sight :eek:).

As for 'normal speak' - we too have started spelling stuff. Unfortunately we now can't get beyond W-A-.....and Harry's sitting by the front door...!!! :D Sally + Harry x

Our Corky understands "Out" "walk" "Poop" "Pee" and his mommy's name "Taylor". He might know more but I have not been paying attention.
