Frontline Plus Hi: I am new to YT. I have a 9-month old female who is the light of my life. Has anyone had a problem with Frontline Plus? I give her the minimum dosage monthly, but she is very lethargic for a couple of days after I apply it, sometimes throws up, and I feel horrible. Although Maggie is an indoor dog, we live in the country, and I take her for walks and there are lots of ticks about. I don't want her to get ticks, but I don't want her to get sick either. |
i think the best thing would be to speak to your vet . maybe she is having a slight allergic reaction. there are lots more flea & tick products out for you to try.. |
I would talk to your vet about it because it could be an allergic reaction. |

:welcome4: I would check with your vet and find another med with different active ingredients for next month. Would love to see pics of Maggie. |
Hello and welcome. |
I have only used Frontline Plus on my cats. I live in a wooded area and my cats love to go out in the woods but the last three years we have had an awful tick problem. The Frontline Plus did nothing to the ticks. We still had fully engorged ticks on our cats. It's so disgusting. I had to meet them at the door and run a flea comb through them to get the loose ticks off them during the worst of the season. I also would have my tick puller handy. I only walk Gracie in unwooded areas and away from the tall grasses where the ticks like to lay in wait of a body. I still would check her as soon as we came back in. The Frontline did kill fleas but the ticks are immune to anything I think. If your pup is having that kind of reaction I would try a different brand and leave off the tick preventive since it doesn't really work anyway. Just keep him out of any tall grass and run a flea comb through him when you bring him in. Oh, I didn't check where you live but ticks can be in sandy areas also. We don't have sand here but some areas do. |
Frontline Plus sucks! We tried it month after month and once Sophie got fleas we could not get rid of them until I switched her to Sentinal. Which also has its downfalls. It does not kill fleas but will not allow them to lay eggs. At least we are not having outbreaks anymore. We might have one every once in awhile but I can deal with that. Just give her a Capstar and you are good to go. I know you are mainly concerned about a allergic response but the product sucks for fleas anyway, so you might as well not waste your time. I just don't want you to have to go through the fun experience I have had with my little girl. :( |
I've been using frontline plus on my three dogs now for almost 12 years. I've never had a flea, and I've never had a problem. The lethargy should be discussed with your veterinarian if this is happening every time you use the product. |
Frontline Plus works well for flea control in our area. We use it every month and have never once had a flea problem. We've never had any negative reactions to the medicine -- I'd definitely consult with your vet. If the product isn't working in your area, ask your what they recommend you use. |
We live in the country too. We used frontline plus for four years. Our walks are limited to mowed areas. I decided to stop using it last year to eliminate unnecessary chemicals health risks and have had no issues. It is a personal choice that works for us. |
I really think Frontline Plus attracts ticks around these areas, LOL. I swear, I did not put any flea/tick stuff on him all summer (well, I gave him one dose of K9 Advantix in June) and saw NO ticks (or fleas) all summer long. First week of October comes around, I figure I'll give him a dose of Frontline Plus to be safe, since he hasn't had any in a while. Suddenly finding ticks left and right on him. Stopped it, and again, haven't seen any ticks since. It's just so strange. I don't really like Advantix as much due to the permerthin, and think Frontline may be a bit safer of a choice, but I think I'm going to apply Advantix to him once every 2-3 months and not bother with Frontline anymore. |
Many ticks have a three stage lifecycle. In the fall a whole new group of aphids are let loose to start the lifecycle all over. They are the most resistant creatures in creation. We did not have a tick problem in many parts of the north east US until the last couple of decades. They have been a problem in the south forever. I have been considering having Gracie vaccinated for lyme disease but still am unsure at this point. |
i cannot give cedric any flea meds...other than this all natural one from the grocery store. it smells like cloves and is the only thing that does not make him sick or larthargic. my vet said if that works to use that and use advantix ii on my other dogs and cats and it should help keep cedric protected as well. i have even tried giving just small doses of frontline plus, advantix, and pet amour plus to him over three days and he still cannot handle it. |
There is a product called Diatomaceous Earth that can be taken internally or externally. Some people rave over it while others are not sold on it. It is an interesting product to read up on as it is totally non toxic and used by humans and animals. It is supposed to eliminate parasites off all kinds. |
