Suggestions for KONG fillings? Riley loves his KONG toy, and I've heard people fill theirs with things then freeze them. I was thinking this would be a good idea as our wee pup is teething at the moment! So I was wondering if you had any recipes for fillings? Bearing in mind he is only a 4 month old pup and a miniature breed so it can't be too calorific as he's only a wee small thing! Any help would be great :) |
Have you tried the dental kong. It has little grooves all around and they make real tiny ones. As for freezing a kong with filling in it i think it would have to be something solid to begin with. Kong has holes in both ends, correct ? The only thing i know of would be the kong filling in the can. |
I've used so many things in the kongs. You seal the small end with peanut butter so nothing will leak out while it freezes ;) Some of the favorites are canned food, organic low fat plain yogurt, kibble, freeze dried liver treats, honest kitchen, grandma lucy's, chicken baby food, frozen green beans, pumpkin, and I just got this stuff for them called Noshers ( Pet Fairy Noshers - Fancy Fillings<br>(great with Kong toys!) and other Pet Fairy Noshers - Fancy Fillings pet products on sale at DoggieFood.com) that I am going to try this weekend when I fill Kongs. I normally pick a filling (yogurt, grandma lucy's etc), then add something else to it (treats, kibble, green beans, etc). They don't get very much of any one thing, and don't get them every night, so their weights are fine. |
wow, cool ideas.. |
I usually put some plain frozen non fat yogurt in it. First I'll put some kibble in, then seal it with the yogurt. But he tends to get bored with yogurt - little weirdo. So I more-so use canned food... just put the canned food in there with a spoon and freeze it and it makes for a nice little snack. Some use peanut butter but he's never liked PB - I tried it once a long time ago and just had a big mess to clean out because he wouldn't touch it  |
Katie Scarlett's fave KONG stuffings are peanut butter or plain yogurt. She goes wild over either! |
My Yorkies also like to bounce their Kongs and have the treats come out. I use Cheerios cereal, dog kibble, shredded raw carrot, sweet potato, green beans, apple, celery, home made dehydrated meat, veggies, and fruit. (NEVER GRAPES or RASINS) |
I fill both of mine with peanut butter and freeze them when I'm expecting guests. Keeps the furz occupied. |
I only put enough peanut butter or cream cheese to give a smell. I smear it on the inside top just under the lip. I can't make it too packed or he will get bored with it. I layer it like a parfait with kibble, Cheerios, and puppy treats. I've tried the spray can fillers but they are extremely messy. I haven't filled with broth and froze yet but I will. I want to start to dehydrate my own meats and veggies. |
I had two things I always did. My first "recipe" is kind of like a doggie bagel(; I would smear cream cheese on the inside, then her dry kibble, then cream cheese, and continue doing that until it's full. Then I would make sure the last layer was cream cheese. I would take a plastic knife and BARELY dip it into strawberry, or apple jam. Not grape though, grapes are bad for dogs. Then i would put a tiny dot of it on top and freeze it. The jam is mainly for smell, since it's so sugary I don't want her having a lot of it. The second thing I did was very similar. I did the exact same process but only with about a quarter of a mashed banana. Then froze it too. I know a lot of people like to put peanut butter in it, but Coco has never really liked peanut butter. I've tried to give some to her multiple times and she just looks at me like "Kirstyn, what the heck it this... *sniff* *sniff* it doesn't smell very good." |
Thanks so much for all your replies :) Only thing is...I've heard some dogs are lactose-intolerant, so how will I know if little Riley is? And is peanut butter definitely ok to give to yorkies? (in small doses I'm sure it is!) x |
