Help with houstraining please!
 

Hi, this is my first time here, and just found this community through an internet search! If anyone could offer some insight to my problem it would be greatly appriciated! Ok, so I do not have a Yorkie, my roommate does, I have a French Bulldog the exact same age, they have lived together since we first got them as puppies. They are both seven months old. The yorkie WILL NOT stop using the bathroom in the house. She will go outside and pee a little bit, but will come inside and pee again. She will do it while I'm home, while my roommate is home, and when she is out by herself and I'm sleeping. My roommate works nights, and I work days, so most of the time I am home at night and she is gone. When I go to sleep I wake up to 2-3 accidents every single morning. I can't put her in her kennel because she will literally bark for up to three hours so not only can I not sleep, but the neigbors have complained about it (this is a huge problem as well). My french bulldog hasn't used the bathroom in the house since she was about 3 months old, and its frustrating that I continue to clean up messes every single morning & night. My roommate doesn't really discipline her yorkie at all, so I imagine thats the big problem. Is there anything I can even do about this? Since I can't dictate how she disciplines her dog when she is home.....but perhaps there is something I can do while she isn't there and I am home with both of the dogs?

Yorkies are smart little dogs which makes it hard to housebreak them. Confinement is your only option really. If she only uses the bathroom as her potty area- Confine her someplace else.

My yorkies did not like the crate. I use a baby playpen for confinement. It works well for me. I can move it anyplace in the house- They were safe and never pottyed in it. I still use it occasionally now.

WELCOME! I agree with going back to crate or confinement training. Since she is not potty-trained, she should not have free run of the house/rooms. Also get a good carpet cleaning solution with natural bacteria and enzymes to get rid of her scent form where she has been pottying in the house.

You and the owner need to watch the pup like a hawk if u aren't going to use the crate idea. I didn't use a crate I just watched him everywhere he went and as soon as I saw the leg go up yell no and take him outside to finish. He was completely trained in three to four weeks now he goes straight to the door. It will take both of u to do this in order for the pup to know that its bad when he does it. Also give a little treat when he goes outside and gradually wean the treats as he gets better . That worked for me

Honestly, I would talk with your rooommate about the situation and direct her/him to this site for some guidance on the potty training.. and all things Yorkie:)

I was going to suggest this also. If you are not able to crate or confine the little one, then you need to be following her around and when it looks like she is ready to go potty, say something - like uh-uh-uh, scoop her up and either take her outside and put her on a pee pad. You have to be diligent and consistency is the best policy. Good luck!

Cage training is a really great tool for potty training but it may be too late for that.

If you ask me, one of the best tools you have right now is your bull dog. He's trained and can show the Yorkie how its done. Take them out together!! Plus getting them on the same feeding schedule would also help.

Leash training also called Umbilical cords is another great way for potty and discipline training. Its a way that you are there every moment with them. You can train them and catch them in the act and put a stop to it quickly with the "aah aah" and a gental tug on the leash. If they are getting ready to do their business... you can stop them in their tracks as well and cart them off to the yard. (take you pup with you for some back up/your pup can show the other what and where to go).

Yorkies don't respond positively to negativity in any way, shape, or form. To quickly train a Yorkie, catch the pup doing 'the right thing' or behavior you want to see more of, and praise the heck out of them, and give treats.

It took me four weeks just to catch my little girl peeing on the peepad, so I could praise her and show her that that is what makes me happy. I had to ignore 50 some accidents around the pad and on the rug, lol. Just cleaned it up.

If you show any kind of displeasure, they will begin to hide their potties and will become fearful of you and /or the owner. Once you praise her for doing right, they usually catch on pretty quickly.

A Yorkie needs to go out much more often than a French Bulldog. The size of the bladder is not the same and development is not the same. The puppy needs to be taken out more often and not left to wander. I would try an exercise pen at night time and see if she will accept that better than a crate.
