STILL won't wear sweaters When I put them on him he automatically puts his head down pouting and rushes off to whatever corner he can find or into his bed. He will stay like that for hours and hours on end! I took him to a friend's to play with another puppy and he sorta forgot it was on, but still wasn't himself. He is sorta the same way with his harness and even leash. He wants to just hide or lay down and not move. This is making it hard to teach him to be outside on a leash and I can't have him off it unless he is on my lap or in a fenced area which I don't have. I gave in and took the sweater off tonight after telling myself I would just leave it on several days. BUT he wouldn't budge out of his bed hardly and I thought it was unhealthy for him to just lie around all night. A positive: he no longer acts this way with his collar and doesn't fight it even though I take it on/off every day. Ugh. |
Belle doesn't really like to wear clothes. She has 5 sweaters and will wear them when its cold outside, but would rather be naked when we're in the house. She loves to play outdoors and she knows when I put a sweater on her she gets to go outside, so she cooperates. Maybe if you treat him when you get him dressed and tell him what a good boy he is he'll learn to tolerate clothes. Make it a positive thing for him. |
I would try him with just a T-shirt while he's in the house. When it's time to go for a walk, then I'd put the sweater or a coat and a harness on him and go right outside with him, and remove it when he comes back in. Maybe the sweater is too warm for him in the house? |
I wouldn't put the harness on unless he is going out. That way he will relate it to something fun and may learn to like it. You could also try that with other clothing. Gracie does not like sweaters. I think it is because they are snug. She does better with a looser fitting coat and pajamas. She is long haired and I think the snugness of a sweater makes her fur feel uncomfortable with it being so tight. I would never leave any article of clothing on a dog all the time. I usually even take Gracie's pajamas off her when we go to bed. She sleeps under the blanket most of the night anyway. |
does he need a sweater? my last dog felt the cold and I try not to run our heat bill up so would keep him in a sweater during the day in the winter, even though he was not a big fan of it. Lola has a lot of hair and does not notice the cold so she is my little nudist girl:D |

So I found a t shirt and put it on last night. Same response. I am so close to giving in because I hate how he is pouty and feel sooooooooooo bad. :p He is currently hiding at my feet under the desk. He did eat and potty but then just rushes off to lay wherever. If I don't stick to my guns he will never get use to clothing and needs them for winter walks! Keeping them on for just a few hrs won't work because everytime I would try to put them on I just know it would be like the first time again. Please tell me I'm not being a horrible person here. :( :) |
Joel does the same thing, hes fine with a sweater but with his harness he thinks hes dying, lol and he wont move and he will start shaking. I think the best thing is to keep doing it everyday like its a normal thing and as hard as it is ignore him pouting. But I've been bad with Joel and dont even practice with him. |
Bailee HATES clothes. He grumbles and growls when we try a sweater. Fortunately, he uses potty pads and our house is warm. He won't go outside without shaking unless the temp is over 60. :):) |
He was following me around a bit with t shirt on and I even had him on the couch with me although he slept the whole time. The second half of the day he has been behind the couch only to come out twice when I made a knocking noise. I feel so bad like I'm doing something wrong and scarring him for life. I know if I just take it off he will be back to himself in a minute. |
aaww my zowi has always loved to dress up in anything anytime! so when i adopted pixie and she froze up when you put any clothes on her, i couldn't believe it. it was like she was wearing a straight jacket and could not move lol! same thing when you put a harness on her, she wouldn't walk. that was when she was 5 months old. now she loves to dress up and gets excited when she knows she's going to be!!! she walks great on a leash while wearing her harness. all i did with her is put something on her and then did something really fun with her like going for a walk or going for a ride in the car, or taking her to my dad's house to visit with him and his 4 yorkies. after doing this several times, she really does love it now. she gets just as excited when she sees it as zowi does and practically begs to be dressed or harnessed. it probably took about 2 months. just try to keep it always positive and eventually he will warm up to the idea. |
Most people have best results in training a dog with rewards. Treats or high praise, doing something they enjoy. Try just putting a shirt on when you are about to go out or play a game. Something that the dog really enjoys and then take it off. Try it every day for a couple of weeks and increase the time you leave the clothing on slowly. My dog hated her harness until her mind started to realize that the harness meant going out for a walk. Then the very sight of the harness caused her to get all excited. Maybe your dog would enjoy treat time right after putting on a shirt then take it off. Do it a few times a day. Slowly it will become a reward and not torture. Some dogs are unimpressed with clothing and can take it or leave it. For others it is a matter of training. |
Wish I had advice to give!! All of mine are dressed daily and have been since they were small pups... I've never had an issue with them not liking their clothes!! I would suggest treats and praise each time you put anything on him.... But, in the end, clothes just may not be for him!! Good luck!! |
Luckily our weather isn't too cold, but our house isn't made for the cold weather either. Ziva always act restricted in clothing so I let her coat grow out in august so she would be a little warmer in Jan/ Feb- until this year! Abby loves t shirts so now Ziva wants to wear them too!! She is a rather jealous sort... |
I guess I wouldn't fight him on wearing the clothes. Perhaps if you made reference to the clothes, picked them up and left your scent on them, eventually he would be curious enough to see what you were doing with them. |
