Bike Riding With Your Yorkie? Do any of you guys go bike riding with your furbaby? Not like running along side the bike, but in a basket? The hubby and I are really looking into getting a couple of bikes. We love the outdoors and would love to lose a few pounds. I see many people in my area riding with small dogs in baskets on the front of their bikes. I was wondering...do any of you YT'ers ride with your Yorkie? I would love to do this if it is safe. So questions...would this be ok? Not on mountain trails or anything like that, just flat pavement or trails at local parks and such. Nothing too hilly or bumpy. We have a lot of nice, easy, scenic trails for bikes in my area. What safety information do I need to know beforehand? If so, anyone recommend a good basket? I know I need a helmet, but does Katie Scarlett need one too? Or any type of protection? I am going to make sure I am confident with the bike on my own before putting her up there with me. I also saw those little cart things you can pull behind your bike, but not sure if that would be an option for us. Any help? Thanks guys! ;) |
Actually that would probably be safer than on a motorcycle. Which I ride with Bella. I bet your babies would love it, especially after they get used to it. |
I know I've seen lots who do it!! I am sure it's fun!! I actually ride a bike with Jackson running along side the bike, but not often enough, as I don't have a bike so I only do it occasionally when visiting my dads house. He LOVES it!! I've rollerbladed with him too. |
I can't remember who is was, but some member posted a pic last summer of her yorkies in a bike basket and they each had little helmets on...it was the cutest thing!!! |
That was me with Zada and Azrael in the basket wearing their little pink helmets. We went bike riding by the ocean on base. Beautiful area. |
We have not taken ours on our motorcycles because we do not have what we consider proper equipment for them yet. But, as a teenager, my Yorkie-Poo's daughter LOVED to ride in the metal basket on the front of my bicycle. She would just sit in the basket and look around. I do have a couple photos but I'd need to scan them. :p |
1 Attachment(s) Here is one of them. I need to really go riding again with them. |

That was on a tread that I started :) I got a this one Redirect Notice But it made nervous...I didn't think she was secure enough for me. Last time I took Furgie bike riding we used a frontpack pouch carrier....it worked out well! Have fun!!! |
2 Attachment(s) i do....but mines is quite different...i purchased a mountain bike in almost new condition off CL for $25 then went to walmart got one of those bike racks for the back and we had a black plastic crate thing that i actually mounted on the back on top of the rack and all 4 of my girls can fit in there ... here are some pictures ... lol ... and after the first incident where Sun Hye jumped out in the middle of the bike ride while moving...good thing i was just barely starting to go on it...i now harness all of them in....so that we won't have that accident in case they decide to jump for whatever reason. |
Yorkiedaze I just have to ask.... Where did you find those wee little helmets??? Too cute :) |
1 Attachment(s) we ride all the time, here is a photo what I use, it is designed for dogs, and because of the cage it keeps the dogs from jumping out, which I have had happen prior to getting this design. I also attach a short leash to the inside until I know the dog is comfortable and not going to jump. My suggestion is to start by putting them in the carrier and then walk your bike for a little while, then a little bit later go out for a short SLOW ride, after they feel secure you can start to ride normally. Be careful on hills and sharp curves and I only ride on paved trails or the streets in my neighborhood. The hardest is climbing up a big hill, I have to stand up and sometimes the bike sort of rocks side to side and that seems to make Lola nervous. I ride my bike a lot more because I can take her along. If we are at the park riding, I always take her for a walk after locking the bike in the truck. Dogs like the breeze in their face so they normally enjoy the bike riding. I got this on line can't remember where just goggle dog pet carriers for bikes and you should see some good options. I don't have a helmut for her but I might see about that since we ride at a good pace |
that's basically what i have.... it has a detachable cage, the basket is made out of wicker and i bought it at Hammacher Schlemmer years ago when Kiva was a puppy (1998). it's awesome! |
this is the closest to what i have. i really love the lining! wish i had that! nice! http://www.yukonpikes.com/servlet/th...Dog-Pet/Detail |
