Pee pad only or outside only So you all with experience, is training soley with pee pads or outside only..which one happens quicker and with less accidents in the long run. I'm doing only pee pads now and sheis peeing and pooping everywhere. |
Both! You need pads/papers indoors for those occasional accidents but should be taking her out every chance you get and than some. Here is my site with some training tips that may work for you. Training Tips - Dawn's Yorkies Ohio |
It is confusing to a dog to try to train for both. If you want your puppy to go outside then you need to be taking it out at every time it looks like it may need to go. You cannot let any puppy go unattended in the home no matter which way you are training. It has been my experience that once a puppy is trained to pee pads it is difficult to get them to change to going exclusively outside. When Gracie was a puppy she used the always use the pee pads as long as she was near them when she had to go. I made sure she was always near them when she was not confined. If you want to your puppy to go outside sometimes but use pee pads when you are gone then train her for the outside but put a pee pad station near the door that you take her outside so if she/he has to go while you are gone she can go there. If you are using an exercise pen to confine when you are not watching her make sure you put a pee pad in there so she knows what to do with it. |
Questions you need to ask yourself is how big is your Yorkie, most Yorkies are too small to be left out alone, so that means no doggie door. Also, are you home all day, so you can let youe dog out when needed? I duel trained Joey, and he never has an accidents, and I love the convenience of the pads, I get to sleep in some mornings! I got rid of all throw rugs for the first two years, but now I have one back and he's been a good boy. |
We do both as well. We mainly use pee pads. Katie Scarlett took about a month to get the hang of them. She had it down pat I thought and then after her spay, she regressed. It's been almost a month since her spay and she has been accident free for many days now, so I think she is back on track. She will go outside when we are on walks or out and about, but other than that, we use pads. She is doing great on them. I always give lots of praise and a teeny piece of a treat when she goes in the right spot. She has definitely figured out that if she goes in the right spot, she gets a goodie. :) |
In general, I do believe outdoor training is quicker than pee pads. But lots are successful with either. Outdoor seems to associate "no pee at ALL in the house" whereas pee pad training, you are teaching them to go on a specific thing or in a specific area IN the house, so it can be more confusing, plus any rugs can also be confused for pads. |
my gang is train with both.. and my dogs don't have many accidents in the house, then again i haved hard wood floors no carpets.. hugs, |
We have Jack trained on both. I love the convenience of the pee pad, specially on those cold winter nights. Jack does prefer to go outside and will let us know (finally learned to let us know he has to go out) but he will use the pads too. Like the OP said, its great because we get to sleep in too! You need to decide for yourself which is best. And initially training for the pad (or even outside) does take some time. Key to training a puppy for either is consistency, consistency, consistency. Good luck! |
My yorkies do both. They´ll go in the pee pads inside when its raining or when its cold and they also go when i take them to the yard or outside. By now they pee in either place and o dont have any accidents inside my house...sometimes they will even poo in the pad if they are not able to go outside...it is a matter of being consistent in training your yorkie where you want him/her to potty. |
